My big boy Diesel
Been carrying my best buddy with a towel wrapped around him to do his business for the last year. Getting up 3-4 times during the night so he didn't have accidents for the last 3-4 months. Over last weekend it just seemed he was tired of not being able to walk or stand on his own. Hard decision to make but called the vet and they came over and he was peaceful as he went down. Damn stuff is just hard. They say all dogs run in heaven. I hope that is true because that is what he was born to do. He could hit high gear and run beside my atv at 34 mph and turn his head and watch my hands to see which way we were turning next. I will miss him. He was 12. Rescued him when he was two.

Sorry for your loss. I had the same issue with our 12 year old boxer 2 years ago. One day she could not move her back legs so I was using the towel to help her. The vet put her on steroids and she was good for about a week and then lost all feeling again and her back legs turned cold from no circulation so we went to another vet for a second opinion and had to put her down. Hardest damned thing I ever had to do. I cried like a baby and still tear up thinking about having to make that decision but the vet convinced me we were only keeping her alive for us and not doing what was right for the dog. You made the right decision.

All the words from the vet sound good but they sure don't take away the hurt. He was as bright as he ever was but half way down his spine he was just limp. IF he had been hurting the decision might have been different. If you saw him laying on his bed you would never know anything was wrong with him. My eyes have been sweating a lot today. Sorry for your loss....they leave a big hole in your heart.

Sounds like the same exact symptoms mine had. She was there mentally. I cried the day I saw her crawl into the living room where we were dragging her back legs just to be with us. It was then that I knew something needed to be done to try and make her better. Unfortunately they are suffering more than they let on. It was tough to say it was time but I was not being fair to her.

Yes sir I do. It will be a while. We have had our farm 11 years and between 2-4 dogs all the time. Pretty much tied us to the place. Love them to death but they require tremendous attention and resources. Old Diesel was the last of the four. I have never seen such an athlete. He could run forever. My grieving started when we had to stop going for rides on the 4-wheeler with him right beside me in whatever gear he needed to be in to stay up. Was never a big face licker and never jumped up on you. All he wanted was to touch you while he laid beside your feet. That was his heaven.

. So sorry for your loss. my boy in my avatar is Tater, found him in a driving rainstorm with a potato chip bag on his head sitting in the middle of the road, thus the name "Tater". at the end of 13-14 yrs his stomach could not process his food, the vet pumped his stomach out, something like 600 bucks, put him on a special food, and a few weeks later, he passed. I'm done. can't go thru that again. cried like a baby. now i'll go of a picture of a goldfish taped to the back of a fishbowl. we move on and enjoy the memories. fun out

Dave,
Not hard to tell you gave him a great life and did everything possible to make him comfortable!
It is never easy no matter how prepared we may think we are especially when the quality of life is just not there for them. Personally been there a few times.
Like Forkin said, plenty of great rescues when you are ready.
I have 2 rescues and currently working with the little guy for the last 5 weeks from a TPLO surgery from a torn ACL and meniscus.
You can be sure he will be waiting for you at the Rainbow Bridge

Thanks to all. No lies to tell here. Eyes still sweat when I walk downstairs and don't see those sweet eyes waiting for his buddy.
