About to learn something new about 2 battery setups.

I recently bought a boat with a 2 battery setup. At the time I didn't think much about it. I have had other boats with 2 batteries, and they have always been connected in parallel or connected through a battery switch. One thing I noticed about this set up that I haven't run into before, is that the positive terminal on one of the batteries has nothing connected to it. So far, I have been unable to find a wiring diagram with this connection arrangement. There are multiple cables connected to the other 3 terminals, and a battery switch is being used. I know someone out there can help me understand how this set up works. How is the battery with no positive connection receive a charge from the alternator?

The short answer is, it isn't receiving any charge or being used for engine start. There are a number of different ways to wire things up but most small boats simply use a 2 battery switch and run them in parallel. The down side is you can drain BOTH batteries if you forget to switch over when you are stopped and running your "house" stuff like a stereo.

Here's a good video describing how an ACR works and the separation of start and house batteries.

My boat already has a Blue Sea battery switch with 1, 2, Both, Off, capabilities. I can set the selector to either 1, 2, or Both, and run anything on the boat including starting the engine. That just adds to my confusion. I guess the next step is to start taking my wire loom covers off and start chasing down wires to see where they go.
