>> Hp vs Weight Outboard <<
Hi guys , been awhile since I have posted here, but I have come to the real pro's
for some information on outboards.
I been building a tunnel hull, 4 years now, and it time to be thinking about power.
I have searched and I can not find a website that list outboards by make/model, Hp and weight.
Trying to find something in the 250hp range and keep the weight in the 350lb range.
Is this possible?
Somebody steer me in the right direction.
(excuse me if I posted in the wrong place)If you think this is fun, wait til next weekend!

You need a 2.5L Merc, either a 260 or 280.

Awesome! A picture IS worth a 1000's words!
Is there any certain model/year I should look for?
Also, here a question that might be hard to answer but I'll throw this out there.
"What would be a "fair" price tag on this Mecr.?
I know there's going to be a huge difference between new(er)/used/mods and other ad-on's
but a ball park figure would be nice.
We all know that something is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it too.
Just trying to keep the high baller off my front pouch!
Thank for the reply. If you think this is fun, wait til next weekend!

You have to buy used. 280 went out of production years ago, 260's are even older. If I was buying I would want good leak down numbers and a fat shaft sportmaster gearcase. The older motors had the CLE gearcase and the propshafts get tired and break.

I have searched around the net and here since you mention them above, haven't seen any.
Also, I've read that "term" before here, not sure what is meant by it. "leak down"
Compression check?
If I can't find one of these merc, what would be my next best option in lightweight, high Hp outboard?
An education guess on my hull weight would be 1300lbs, thus the higher Hp needed.
Thanks, great infor. If you think this is fun, wait til next weekend!

Leak down is a test done with a leak down tester that measures how much is leaking past rings/ cylinders in a percent value which gives you a better idea of how good the rings are sealing to the cylinders. Another option would be a 225 promax which actually produces around 240 hp. It will make better low end power than the 260 and 280 which is a good thing for the extra weight. There are cheaper, more available and have steel sleeves which allow you to run more hours before having to re-ring motor. Don't make as much high rpm power as the 260 and 280 but are very durable, strong motors.

1300# hull only or rigged minus motor?
How about 380hp/340ft-lbs at 570# for $6k?

This should help with the weights. Pick the manufacturer, then the year, and bingo.

Speaking of the 225 promax, how heavy is it, and is it a good reliable recreational boat motor?

I think Merc claimed 350 but some internet people say closer to 400 lb. Light by today's standards and reasonably reliable. They are old motors now. I love mine.
