Oh....and I presume all the shafts are the same, regardless of gear ratio???

Your lucky. I broke a fat shaft right behind the forward gear. It trashed all the internals gears, drive shaft, bearings all junk.

RH Shafts are the same but cost $570
LH shafts are very similar but cost $170

Nope everything looked perfect. Defective shaft broke right in front of where he clutch dog pin goes through. You can see what looks like a weld where it broke.

I'm fixing a torque master right now that broke in same spot for no apparent reason. Also took gears out. I was thinking about going to fat shaft after I broke my small shaft. But looks like they both have problems with breaking with age.

Mine had bad case threads from factory, when the nut slipped tension from shift dog made her snap right in the middle of slot. Stock shaft was small but no more smallshaft so went fatshaft. Had to get case threads fixed.

Did it break at high speed or taking off? Just curious how the boat reacted when it broke. That's one of my biggest fears, losing a lower at 80+.

I had just ran a ways at 8200rpm and lost the prop when I let off. Nothing drastic, just coasted to a stop!
My boat is rear heavy though!

hope you marked where it happened.
then go down and retrieve the prop and what is left of the shaft.
provided its not in 100 feet plus of water.
