    Question

Any ideas what else to check on a 1998 225 DFI Optimax? Coils have been checked, spark plugs replaced, compression has been checked, spark jumps over 1/8" on each cylinder, starts easy and idles smooth, propeller is right for the boat. Engine has very poor low end response, boggy, no exhaust smoke, hard to plane off, 19 foot Ranger Reata, top rpms are 5650+/-.

    Thinking perhaps TPS.

Are the vent holes in the prop open? Engine height right?

Yes holes are open, prop is in perfect shape, no nics or bends. Engine heights have been changed while trying to plane off, and boat has a hydraulic Jackplate.

How old is the boat? Maybe it has gained weight. Has the engine been scanned to verify all the sensor are within accurate parameters? How did the old plugs look when you changed them? Have the injectors ever been serviced? Have you checked the reeds (steel reeds tend to crack and break)?

Boat is a 2001 Ranger Reata, it had a 200 Opti on till 3 weeks ago, that worked excellent, removed plugs looked all the same, no fouling and no lean burning, they could have been left in as they were still good- boat has no fiberglassed over wood in it anywhere to get heavy, it's all glass, the 225 was purchased used. It was put on a scanner at a Merc dealership locally, the engine has less than 100 hours on it, the age of the engine (1998) doesn't allow the scan tool to say why something is amiss only what it is, only the TPS came up on the scan tool, which the engine has 2 of them, (TPS) the dealer mechanic made a TPS adjustment but it still won't power up on plane, takes a long way to plane up, it will occasionally get on plane from the get-go but not real often, maybe 10% of the time.

Engine was a US Coast Guard engine on Lake Superior.

1998 with only 100 hours means it sat around a lot. You say it does get full RPM, so I would think it's something like a bad spot in the TPS which the mechanic should have checked for with the scan tool attached or a broken reed or two. Being the first generation Opti's there were plenty of problems with them.

Yes full rpm within a 100 or so.. Near as we could find out the engine being owned by the Coast Guard, they had completed the factory bulletins for external coils & reeds, and had regular scheduled maintenance done, it was 1 of 2 engines on the CG boat that they traded in for new 4 strokes.

The mechanic did the scanner check while in a hurry as they don't charge us usually do to we do some machine shop work for them free of charge when needed so I suppose he may have skipped over the TPS voltage run from idle to w.o.t., it simply told him a TPS code was present. I have ordered the 2 new ones (83295221 & 83295211) and they should be on by this Tuesday for testing. Hopefully that's the problem.

Those dual tps setups were notorious for giving problems. Prob the culprit.

Yeah but *usually* when one goes bad you go to RPM limit mode (2500?) And with both bad you're stuck at idle. Check the voltage on them.

Ok, got to work on it a little lately, I installed the 2 new TPS units, still has the same problem. Went out yesterday with a Mercury trained Tech and the Mercury Digital Wrench computer, he couldn't locate any problems on the Mercury computer, Tech said "it looks like the ECM may not be seeing the initial throttle being opened, or sees it very slowly" I may just run it for now as the top speed over 3,000 RPMs is fine and it idles perfectly, he checked the TPS voltage at different throttle opening said it's right on factory specs.
