This was a good thread. I think the mid 115 - 175 is the most interesting segment. Lots of change coming. Looking foward to seeing what Mercury does with their new 2.1 L and 3.0 L 4-strokes. I think the 3.0 will move up the lineup, 175 and hopefully 200. Maybe even XS versions.

Because typically, 4-strokes get their power in the upper RPM range. There's a reason all the Motocross racers switched to 4 strokes.
We're not talking tractor motors here haha.
Think of it this way... the Suzuki GSXR and all crotch rocket 600cc motors rev to 16,000+ rpm. 4 strokes. All HP up top.
Motocross bikes rev to like 5 or 6000 rpm... and are way torquier than the 2 stroke counterparts.
Comparing a 115hp 4 stroke to a 115hp two stroke.... The displacements are going to be way different. Therefore, torque curves different. But If you look at the Merc 115 Pro XS (race-ish motor) and compare to the Honda 115 (tractor motor) you'll see a difference too.1) 1995 14' Bayliner Restoration <--Click

Anyone wanna do a tug-of-war?
My 115 Pro XS vs an evinrude 115 E-Tec !!!
If geared the same, lets put on 15 pitch props, then 26 pitch props.... see how they both do?
I wish outboards came with hp/torque graphs.1) 1995 14' Bayliner Restoration <--Click

Ya, four strokes can rev and rip for sure. That's why I am kind of disappointed in Suzuki, Yamaha and Honda's performance marine efforts. They should be making the lightest, best performing engines on the water with their bike racing experience. Love that 115 XS.

When they switched from 2 stroke to 4 in motorcross they went from 250cc to 450. 2 strokes have also gained a lot since then.
