The red boat was Danny Piggott and the white boat was Harry Kerslake. Harry's other ride at that time was a SD class boat so I got to know him a little. The boat was a Baja originally intended for SJ class. Wouldn't stay on the water at U class speeds.

I had a particularly good view of this accident as it happened. I was standing at the railing just behind the start clock as the U Class field came down for the start. Almost all of the field had got the time right so it was pretty much side by side straight across the whole bunch. Before they got to the Stadium stands they were all real loose with a lot of side to side shuttling along the line. When they got to the grandstands Harry's Baja just lost it and blew over Danny and Reggie were collateral damage.

Clambake. They shot all the racing scenes at the Orange Bowl 250. The boat Elvis was supposed to driving was actually driven by Lou Brumette. It was a Mandella I think. Norskog won the thing as well as the 9 Hour with no relief driver.

The year was 1975. It was the 1975 APBA OPC Nationals at Miami. Lots of boats at this race. We traveled all the way from Kankakee, IL to race in FJ Class.

I'm jealous. Very cool accounting and I appreciate it. I wish I was around to see this era of boat racing. I feel like it was a sort of 'golden age' of racing. It's not like this anymore
I was not sure if this was that very same flip. This photo is in the box of thousands of photos from Randy Rabe that I am scanning. There is also a small box of negatives, which I am going to develop, though they're in very poor shape. Interesting that Randy caught this image. This is not THE 'triple flip' photo that's popular, is it? I knew about Reggie, though I did not know the others.
Thanks Sam,
Greg
This is another image in that series, I assume right after the accident:

There is at least one very good motor drive photo sequence of this accident. I think it may have been taken by a Miami Herald photographer. I have only seen the whole sequence once. Usually the start and finish get left out.

There is only one triple flip!
There are 2 sequences - if you splice the 2 together in chronological order, you see what actually happened. I think you are just looking at the lesser known sequence.
The one that was featured in the Herald is credited to Jim Jost ... of OMC.
