    1980 Allison rs-16 questions

I just picked up a 1980 Allison 16' boat. The boat needs a transom and floor so I was planning on taking care of that. Can anyone tell me what these boats were made from from the factory? Was it poly, vinyl, epoxy resin? Also it looks like the boat was painted. Did these boats come from the factory with gell coat or paint?

Secondy I can't find much info on the 16' model. I have a 1998 90 elpto Mercury and a 1995 150 Mercury xr6 with smaller gear case. Can this boat handle the 150? What motor and what props should I consider? (I really want to run the xr6)

Also can anyone recommend an ultra light weight but strong deck coring material? I'm about 275 and I need a strong deck but as light weight as possible for another project.

I think I'll add some sponsons to the transom to help float the v6. From the photos I've seen the boats sit down in the rear so I was planning on putting my fuel tank in the bow and mounting my batteries forward. I plan on using bluewater 26 for the transom and either carbon core for the deck or corecell. Since the cap is coming off and the boat will be gutted I may add 3" to the transom and gunwall height to help with fishing as well. I think with spohnsons and the the way the boat sits (just by pics I've seen) I think I would be fine to fish off the front deck. My goal isn't all out race but able to fish and disgruntle some of my pals with bigger boats that flap there gums about how fast they are (most run about 60mph lol)

PLEASE don't try to make a fishing boat out of that. She deserves to be ressurected as a vintage OPC boat. You can find a much better fishing boat candidate. Just my 2cents worth....

Ha! There's no way I could buy a fishing boat not even a John for the price I got this for. Seriously it's a no brainer for me. I've always wanted specifically this hull and now it's here. After all it's just fiberglass and I can build the thing new from the ground up all over again if I had to. It is what it is sorry if your feelings are hurt but not really either lol I am excited to see what I can do with it. I've never seen one of these made for fishing so it will be something different.

look at the bright side the shrimp in the livewell will be holding on for dear life!

Its just another polyester fibreglass boat suffering from neglect and bad workmanship when it was made like so many others of that era !! leave the guy alone to do what he wants to do !!if he wants a 100mph fishing boat so what !!

Maybe you can turn it upside down and make a bomb shelter when the north Koreans start sending big bang thingies your way !

Messing round with boats is fun !! the learning never stops ,even after more than 30 years there's always something new happening somewhere ! BUT somethings never change and some problems never go away and just keep reoccurring !!so moved into Composite Forensics , Now that something completely new !!

If he wants to rebuild it with epoxy, will you leave the guy alone to do what he wants to do?

Ignore all of the bs and go ahead with the re-build. I have fished out of my HydroStream many times. No big deal. The coreboard and foam core will both be good materials for a lite strong boat. Slap the v-6 on it and let it rip...

Ha! That's my black lab and she's crazy. Doesn't surprise me a bit that she is trying to become famous.
