Interesting read on epoxy, albeit biased by a site that uses the "West System"epoxy.

    Both links are short reads.

Everybody that knows glass work, knows that epoxy is far superior to any poly. West is only beating their own drum...Vinyl has closed the gap but it is not the equal of a quality, hi solids epoxy. Epoxy is still the most expensive resin out there. That is the only drawback to it....

Ignorance and coupled with a little stupidity and there you have it folks !!

Its really not worth it ! If it was necessary then why wasn't the boat made with epoxy in the FIRST PLACE ? Basic simple WORKMANSHIP is where the biggest and most important issues lay .
OH BUT I USED EXSTENSIVLY THE BEST EPOXY RESIN AVAILIBLE SO IT MUST BE GOOD !! BUT if the workmanship is not what it should be like is seen so many times then in reality its a total waste of time !
Messing round with boats is fun !! the learning never stops ,even after more than 30 years there's always something new happening somewhere ! BUT somethings never change and some problems never go away and just keep reoccurring !!so moved into Composite Forensics , Now that something completely new !!

ohh polyester and vinylester don't forget !! over and over and over and over again !
If it wasn't for either of these esters you wouldn't have little boats to tinker with , you'd be still looking for hollow logs along the shore line to race !

ok if you going over WOOD then yes epoxy is best to use ! so you can use it to skin your hollow wooden log !

Epoxy gets used a lot in aircraft from some reason. Do you know why? That's where I started using it 30 years ago.

and boat masts, they skipped esters knowing too heavy and not strong enough versus aluminium.
and foils on foiling boats, even then many or the angled corners are milled from titanium and inserted into the 2 carbon epoxy sections

Guess you prefer a steam engine under your hood in your vehicles. No need for gasoline motors. No need to improve as time goes on...right?

I dont get it, are you saying all these could have been made with polyesters/vinylesters and not epoxy?

you have underestimated whats all ready been done
There are much better light weight resins now than either of those 3 and once the price becomes more competitive you'll be seeing them getting use ! But in all my years of making hundreds of different things have never ever had to think about using epoxies apart from glues and skinning wooden boats that all !

Ok got it, yes all that stuff is just strength the weight issues so whatever fits the bill gets used.
