Quick Powerhead Swap Question Evinrude 225

Will a 1992 Evinrude 225 Powerhead drop right on to a 1986 XP 200 Midsection? Simple drop on? Same base and exhaust etc..?

    Thanks!

well they both use the same powerhead to adaptor gasket so you should be ok, but maybe someone who has done this will
chime in and put your 100% right

I am pretty sure I have seen this done a couple of years back , ???

It will bolt to the adapter with no issues however the crank shaft has the splines located different from the 86 so you will need to change the drive shaft or run a 92 or newer lower unit.

Thanks for the help, I guess that kind of kills the idea of the swap if I have to get a lower unit anyway... I thought I had seen talk about the differences/comparisons of the 86/87 XP 200 VS the early 90's 225 Evinrudes on here or online somewhere? Anyone have opinions on which is better or actually puts out more power? I have a 1986 XP 200 and I am trying to figure out if I should rebuild it or a later 225.. Do the later 225s have much more power or are they really about the same, according to some suggestions the XP 200s actually put out more than the later 225s, if I remember that correctly? What would any of you guys do? And of course I have to ask the age old question of how to get MORE POWER out of these old dogs???

What exactly do you mean by the splines located differently? Just the splines are different or the location of them lines up differently? So up to 91 uses the same lower as the 86? Can anyone identify for sure what year this is? No numbers on it that I can find..Click image for larger version.

Same spline. Location top to bottom is different. Picture looks to be 88 to 91 as ignition is 88 or newer and trim system is 91 or older.

I was able to find the Model number was painted over on the one in the pictures..its a 1988 225. Now my question is which engine do you think would get me the Max MPH? If I rebuild the '88 225 or the '86 XP200? I thought I had read on here people thought the XP200s actually put out more power than the 225s? Just an old wives tale or go by the numbers on the cowl? Both need rebuilds, which is the better option??

I like the 86-87 2.7 looper 200XP. But thats probably just because thats what I have.
If I don't ask any questions, I'll never learn anything.

In 86/7 the xp had .025 off the heads compared to a same year 225. The 88 3.0 (200XP/225 same, 25 inch 200 smaller carb)) will have more bottom end but a couple less hp up top but if you install the 2.7 heads on it it will be better every where.
