Any machinist here that will build a splined adapter
I have a 2001 Johnson 50HP powerhead with 17 spline shaft I need to put on a 1991 40 outboard with 14 spline shaft and was wondering if I could have a bushing made because a 15" shaft for 17 spline can't be found or afforded.
The 17 spline is a good bit larger than the 14, but I don't know if a bushing would be strong enough.
I came here because I know there or several machinist here.Last edited by ACAMS; 04-24-2017 at 12:47 PM.

So you're trying to use the gearcase/driveshaft from a 1991 40hp on a 2001 50hp engine? Are the shafts the same diameter with just different number/pitch of splines? Are the shafts the same length? Is a longer shaft available for the gearcase you're trying to use?
I've kinda done this on my OMC V8's when I retrofitted Mercury CLE gearcases. I bought the longer shaft, then had it cut and resplined to fit the OMC splines.Keith-

you need the top bit of the longshaft welded onto the short shaft.
can you not just change a crank from an engine the same year as the gearcase. ?

you could put the 14 spline crank in the 2001 motor.
