Bass boat repower
I purchased a 2002 Stroker bass boat hull, no engine, and have been looking for a good 250 xs, a go fast freind of mine said I should consider a 2.5 promax 225? any thoughts on the two?

Both great motors. I'm partial to the 2.5s. Both will run very well on top end. Kinda like comparing a big block to a small block. The pro max will turn up quicker and can turn more rpm than the 3.0 liter. The pro xs has more low end torque but doesn't like as much rpm as the pro max. Will have to run a taller prop on xs to get top end than the pro max. Resulting in close to same top end speed with the pro max getting there quicker. The pro max makes around 240-245 hp and the 250 pro xs around 270-275. Depends on what you after with boat. I feel the promax is a better platform to do performance mods to and gain even more power for less money than the pro xs.

Pro max will burn nearly twice the fuel as the XS. XS will be faster, and handle a loaded boat better too.

Pro max might have a slight advantage with out a compressor to fail. But the pro max has the old switch box electronics vs the opti having a digital pcm. Fairly close in reliability. Nice thing about the opti is the available smart craft gauges that monitor fuel rate, gallons used, etc...Both just great motors!

It is a good question. The fuel savings of the Opti motors seems to be out weighed by the cost of compressors blowing up and sending crap thru the fuel rails. Seems like it is a pay me now or pay me later deal.

The newer style compressors are good for at least 800 hrs from my experience. Will a promax ran at 6500+ rpm's last for 800 hrs?....Maybe...But I agree, gonna play gotta pay...One way or the other.

I honestly think if you want to just enjoy your boat and go fast without hot rodding it. The 250 pro xs is hard to beat. There's a reason almost all your new heavy bass boats has one on back.

Now if you just want to be a nut cake and can't leave nothing alone about like half of us on here and want to try and see just what you get out of it and how hard you can make it accelerate. Go with the pro max.

Well, thanks for all the great advise, I just bought a 2000 pro Max, 225, The price was right as I could not find an xs for under 10,000 used, it should match up nice with our performance , light weight boat. Our boat has ran over 100, with the previous owners 300 xs. any advise on props, for a loaded bass boat?

For your Stroker it hard to beat a Bravo 1 with the flare cut a tad and pvs holes drill for the hole shot , for the price and carry a load .
