2008 hpdi 225?
I found a clean HPDI 225 with what the owner believes is a blown # 6 piston for a decent deal. I am wondering if these were good engines and if so what would be involved in replacing that bad piston? Do those engines have steel sleeve would the Yamaha have a nikasil cylinder? I know whatever caused the piston to blow would need to be addressed which I had read could be a fuel pump issue or maybe injector? Anyhow, for $1000 would this engine be worth messing with? I doubt I will be able to turn the engine over to check the rest of the cylinders as the motor has been torn down into parts. Any feedback on these engine in general and the possible damage would be great as I want to either move on or go pick this motor up.

Those motors were hit and miss. Yamaha replaced a bunch of powerheads under warranty until going 4 stroke only.

The small block HPDI's were great but as stated above the big blocks were hit or miss. I've seen em with 3k hours on boats that run fishing charters but most people who let them sit all the time seem to pop around the 500 hr mark....but then again it's hit or miss. From a mechanic's stand point I would not own one as they are so unpredictable on when they want to tell you up yours for good. Bout like any other 2 stroke....don't let em sit for long and you will probably have better luck than others.

I have a 2.6 200 vmax hpdi and I really want more power. The big block HPDI is very tempting because of the existing yamaha rigging, but I have my concerns. I might jump on a 250 opti instead?
