weight balancing connecting rods
Where is the weight removed from either the 5250 or 8118 rods?
Just smooth out the sides or some off the small end?
Just to weight balance the piston/rod assembly.

This is just me. I weigh rod as a whole then set up a way for rod to pivot from each end then get weight from both ends to see if extra weight is in center or on one of the ends. Then remove weight accordingly. Usually just smoothing the edges that look like casting marks. This is just my unprofessional method.

There are some good video on youtube on this. I've watched it but don't remember the exact sequence. I think you balance each end using a pivot fixture and then do the total weight. I would think the most important thing is to have a quality repeatable scale.
Speed cost money. How fast you wanna go?
I have done so much with so little for so long, I can now do the impossible with nothing!

Shows if ya got the nads you can take weight off where ever you want... Be nice to see how long those would last in a lake motor,

There is nothing wrong with Doing Rods as pictured so long as they are smoothed all over and the bob weights are matched as well as total weights. Ive turned these 11k. But IMO rods like these dont need to go in a river motor thats going to be run up and down at various RPM. Drag motor rods are exactly that.
