Got my first four stroke outboard (kind of)
I have been intrigued with these ever since Scott Porta first introduced me to Bill Lawson (Owner of Daytona Propulsion systems). Bill was the man behind the old Merlin diesels and like Scott is a genius at many levels. Bill designed these to be used by municipalities for service vessels (coast guard, police, fire, tow boats etc.) The unit is a turbo charged diesel with a fully enclosed cooling system, inter cooler, and is coupled to a jet drive that Bill designed. They weigh about 900 lbs but are buoyant giving a mounted (in water weight of approx 400 lbs). This one that he built for me has a bigger turbo then what he normally runs, bigger injectors, bigger heat ex changer, and modified impeller. It makes approx 320 horsepower and 600 lbs of torque. The stock version gets 16 mpg at idle and 9 mpg at 36 mph cruise on one of his 20 foot center console test boats. I am putting this on an 18 Boston Whaler Outrage which has a built in 63 gallon tank so I shouldn't have to stop for fuel too often doing intercoastal cruises and Bill expects it to run mid to upper 50s with a 45 mph cruise. Check out the video from 2:45 to 3:45 its a pretty cool package.

Very cool.
Talk about thinking outside the box.I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.
I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

That's a pretty cool design. Seems to work very well on that hull too. Should be a great on the whaler hull, keep us posted when you mount it up

That one could be easily upgraded with the stuff that I had done to mine. The biggest cost would be changing the injection pump to one with more advance so that it could still rotate back to a low smooth idle. They have been documented with 20,000 trouble free hours on them. There are a lot of them being used on work boats around the oil rigs in the gulf.

Love the shallow water capabilities of it...... you's have to be pretty unlucky to mess one of those up.
