    1991-2 Mercury V200 Questions

New member here, but I've been doing plenty of reading. I just purchased a 1991 Radiant Marine 20 (Lake & Bay splash). And it has a 91-92 Mercury V200. This is my first experience with older Mercs so I have a few questions and hopefully you guys are the ones to help. The boat has been sitting since 1996.

The past owner said the boat had no problem doing 70+. The motor has a bob's nose cone. And it came with a very Interesting prop, a 5-blade from I'd say the early 90s with only the numbers 80026. I am assuming a 26p prop. Anyways, I just got the motor running. I plan on deleting the oil injection, carb cleaning (although luckily the past owner drained the gas from them 20 years ago), new reeds. Any other suggestions on things to look at?

Anything specific I should know about these motors? Is this a 2.4 or 2.5? What RPM range should I shoot for?

I'll post up some pics a little later

Welcome to the site. 91-92 are interesting years for Merc. The 2.5 was just coming out and your motor could be a 2.4, a 2.4 fat block, or maybe even a 2.5. Post a pic or two of the powerhead and someone will probably be able to tell. Advertised rpm around 6000. Good luck.

Nice fishin boat but I was talking about the powerhead. Motor with cowl removed and pics of both sides tells a lot.

I'll get that picture tonight or tomorrow. I figured I'd post a pic of the boat as well

clamp bracket may be '91/'92 but power head is pre fat block regular motor... not 91 or 92.. probably '89/'90 2.4 200... has horizontal 5 petal front with wh carburetors .. may/may not have originally been a water cooled 40 amp changed ta 16.. jus kinda looks suspect.

there is a build date stamped at tha base of number 2 cyl. on tha block half.. kinda behind tha bend in tha timin' arm.. will be 1/8" numbers.. m/d/yr... might be hard ta see but they are there...

Your on the right track with the oil injection. I would check compression just to be sure the water jackets are the only thing leaking a little. You would like Chris Carson reeds. Motor looks good.

Awesome. Thanks for the help on determining the specifics of the motor. The boat is a 91 probably built in 90, so I think a 1990 motor is likely to be the case. I did take a compression test. But this was before I got it started. My Compression Numbers are:

    1- 120
    3- 120
    5- 121

    2- 122
    4- 126
    6- 125

Once I get it running for longer than a couple seconds at a time, I'll retest.

I do have some sort of leak when It is cranking and then fires, I get a squirt of fuel blowing towards the back on the right side of the block. Behind all the switch boxes and wires, so I'll have to dig a little to find what it is. But overall the motor is decently clean, and the hour meter reads 791 hours. Going to order some Carson Reeds. Are these what I need?

    Thank You for the help

I find that the bleed off hose on the top or middle gets squished between the switch box right at the nipple. Its happened to me a few times. poor design. I bet thats where its leaking from.
If I don't ask any questions, I'll never learn anything.
