Prior to a few ago I just put gas and oil in the boat and changed props. Last year some guys on the HydroStream Power Tour really started to help me out on these old crossflows. I am still very green but starting to get there and understand these motors better and feel more confident on swapping out parts and playing with them. Although that washer thing last year was my fault I would guess, gotta remember to tighten all the bolts! Not all but one bolt...... Keep at it and there is always guys here willing to help and take the time to keep helping!

I really appreciate the help. I've worked on and rebuilt 6 twin cylinder motors. I learned a lot by reading and hands on experience. This is my first motor of this size. I'm not scared to work on it, just frustrated by being ripped off.

Ok now time to get cracking on it and strip it down.
the good thing about this motor coming apart is it will be an easy one to do.
its obviously been apart at least twice to have different size pistons, so its not a virgin engine thats been together for 40 odd years.
lets see what those bores look like, hopefully you can get away with a hone, if not get all of them to 30 or even 40 over and rebuild the beast.
just have plenty of penetrating oil handy and a bit of luck.
do post plenty of pics as I am sure there will be plenty to advise on any problems along the way.

Before you start tearing it down, I'd suggest trying to find a factory repair manual for it. You may not find one for that year, but if you can get one within a couple of years difference it might save you some grief.

The motor is pretty clean and everything is coming apart easily. I bought a factory evinrude manual right after buying the boat. I pulled the intake cover and one ring has about a third of it missing. I'll tear it down soon but I have to finish rebuilding my lawn mower engine first. Thanks again.

Haha. It is work but I enjoy it. My brother, dad and I collect wheel horse tractors and mow with them every summer. This one has a cast iron kohler. Serious quality unlike the throw away engines used now.

Update on the motor. It looks like the pin that keeps the piston rings from rotating either pushed in or came out, letting the ring rotate and catch on the port. I'm thinking of replacing the bad pistons, honing it and installing all new rings. The bores aren't perfect but They measure within spec. I would normally do a more thorough rebuild but it seems that this powerhead is 1977 and newer. My motor is a 1976. The powerhead fits the adapter and the water passages line up. The 4 mounting studs and 4 outer mounting bolts line up, but the 4 inner ones do not. Kind of rigged I know, but that's how I bought it. I never realized this until recently. I can't find a 1974 to 1976 powerhead so I may just try it this way until I can find one or until I can afford a newer motor. Thoughts?
