Rebuild Kit for a 200 Chrome Bore

My old 2.4 200 chrome bore is getting a little tired. I just did a compression test and its 100 to 105 all around .. still starts and runs fine, but the writing is on the wall ... like us humans, it ain't going to last forever. Unlike humans I can rebuild it !

The boating season will be over soon here in Aus so I am thinking about doing a rebuild over winter.

Obviously I need to pull it down before I know what I am dealing with, but lets say the bore is still good, is there a recommendation for a rebuild kit ? Are they still readily available ?

Thanks Chris, I might take you up on the offer.

My neighbour tried his compression gauge and on his I am 120 - 125psi all round. So my engine is either good or not so good, depending on what gauge is right ! Need to find a 3rd gauge.

It did drop power this afternoon, now won't rev about 5100 (5900 before) ... I'm looking into that. Plugs look fine .. will test compression again tomorrow. The power is surging on and off like a lead is failing or something.

Do a leakage test on it. It will tell you the health of the engine as far the rings go. I have rebuilt many engines that were at other shop that simply performed a
compression test and missed the real issues. OTC 5609 is a inexpensive but great tool. I own 2 of them as they are easy to read. . Here is a little thing I done
many years ago on another site. Hope it helps.

Thanks for the info. I got a 3rd gauge, unfortunately it was also reading around 100psi, so she's an old girl. I'll pull the heads and hope the chrome bore is still good and then rebuild her.

I also worked out the issue with the power drop. Took the airbox off, put a camera on the motor and went for a screaming run (sounds like music with that cover off). The video clearly shows the top right barrel running out of fuel after about 10 seconds WOT. Drained the float and noticed there was very little fuel in that same bowl. Pulled the carb off, opened up and the needle is jammed so the float will not rise. Easy problem... she lives to fight another day !

It's a great video of the motor screaming .. I'll upload latter.

Leak down test would still be a good idea. Find out the exact health of the power head.
Also running with the cover off will lean out the A/F ratio in higher rpms. You will need to jet up of you plan to leave it off.

Yeah I will get a leak down tester but at 100psi I think it will be ready for a rebuild. I'll pull the heads soon and check the bore.

That was really just a test with the engine cover off ... who knows though after a rebuild with some warming up I might end up with velocity stacks and rejet to suit, even if just to hear it sing.

    cheers
    Steve
