ID:	368468Started a transom rebuild today. This going to be a little different than most in that
switzer 170s have quite a bit of metal built into the rear of the boat.Today went well,Engine and plate removed.Rub rail came off intact!Lots of rivet's drilled and removed, and the port side is loose I got a bonus in that the splash well was never bonded to the transom on the inside.(It will be)Tomorrow the cap should be off,and I'll get a look. Here's a few pics from the start.

This sounds like the perfect example of a bad example ! Looks like a older style boat that has seen better days transom wise !
The splash well deffinitly needs to become a structural part of the transom as they DO provide a substantual amount of bracing when they are glassed together and become a part of the structure ! Depending of the condition of the wooden packer this would be a perfect project to make a solid glass packer ! Doesn't look to be very big in width or height wise so building solid would take care of it once and for all for the rest of the life of the boat !!
What motor are you using ??

Messing round with boats is fun !! the learning never stops ,even after more than 30 years there's always something new happening somewhere ! BUT somethings never change and some problems never go away and just keep reoccurring !!so moved into Composite Forensics , Now that something completely new !!

Another good day Cap is off,old stuff is 99% out. What it boils down to is this.IMO the original as designed transom was OK but marginal for use with a V6 power plant. At the time, the IL6 150 was top of the food chain power wise. There is only a 1 1/2" angle iron at the top of the transom supported by two stringer supports. There was a 5/8" void between the top of the transom and the top of the splash well.So the engine was sitting on only the cap.The splash well was not bonded to the plywood.A few pics from today.Click image for larger version.

Bold above? Exactly as had a 74, new XS Blue stripe. Again, what does the 2.4 weigh? Damn keep that girl alive! I had same seats, but no built in tank as if racing, drop the weight. Had 3 6 gallon plastic cans, 18 gallons and 18 beers in the "playmate" cooler Just enough the day on the lakes And Bobby (known then, still do) built it, Jim Moulis "King of the Cushion" Outlaw sprint cars, and ran Fox Lake harbor back the "Blarneys/Ill Chain of lakes" rigged it and had the rare horizontal race only trim rams, no tilt. And the motor was "massaged by "Uncle Ralph". Ralph Kozan back there.
The Mems, I could bring up would have Gregs server SMOKING! Here my only bitch the Swit was needed "more meat" side wind shields trim where no Plexi under, and some large meat head dude got out the dock! See in the coming pic.
But the funniest that pic was my buddy "Jimmy"! Some times I had to drag the boat home from the lake house times ..(like twice a "hole in one"), but Jimmy there was in a full leg cast a M/C accident. So one day Sunday night, wasted W/E. fun, he was still in the damn boat pulling it on the trailer. (pic was later) and said.."let me ride back here home..(45 miles). WTH, his GF jumps in, gave them a 6 pack and off we go! I remember my GF telling them.."put yer life jackets on!" Yep made it back, stopped the biker bar town, and now 4 more "want a ride" So two us car, 6 in the boat and a "scenic" ride town. Until cops pulled us over..(all WELL known them too"!)
"All ya out the boat..NOW" Walk home or in the car. But Jimmy sat there? Cops says "out" Jimmy says "I can't"! WHY?
Only good old Jimmy.." I CAN'T SWIM"! HA!
So we pile in the car..(clowns in a Monte Carlo)

Thanks the ear, my rambling the way it was..(DAMN!) 43 YEARS ago! Great GREAT times...
Wish the best on that Swit

Tunnels, current power is 260.That is coming off and a fresh 280 is going on.Going to change a few things that I can see that will help greatly.Biggest problem is the thickness is fixed by the splash well @ just over 1 1/2"
