How many Inches of Set Back on HydroStream V hulls???
I have an 85 V - Hull and want to go from CMC jack only to 9 1/2" by adding a Sea Star 4" mechanical jack can someone explain why so Many boats in this hull run better with motor farther back? years ago my HST would NOT run with CMC only and ran excellent with 11" of set back, 2 way different hulls but set back seems to really help top end. And the overall "balance" of boat. Your thoughts appreciated.

Generally, the more set back the more bow lift. Each boat has it's own sweet spot. I run a 5'' jackplate for convenience. But my boat would run better with no setback.

So, does that mean with more setback i can use less trim and keep motor more verticle? that would be good

In my sig pic I am running 5'' set back and you can see the motor is dead level. That was turning a 28p lightning et prop at 6k. Mid 80's or so....My bottom is blueprinted, straight, with sharpened strakes. Fuel and battery in the stern. Your boat may run similar depending on the bottom and weight placement.

Low 80's with 2. That was a 225 3.0 liter EFI. Runs about he same speed with a tuned 2.5 200 EFI with same prop, but closer to 7000. (1.75 vs 1.87 gears) I am not reaching it's full potential since I do not trim past level as I want to stay dry.....Give it any pos trim and it will fly the nose real easy. Boat is fully re-built with foam and core board. Much lighter than original.

From looking at the pic of yours, it might use 6'' of set back. Trim is quite high, bottom may have some hook. They all did from the factory. What are the prop type/pitch and revs?

well thats what Frank Mondello (fb) of New York said he had a Viper with a 2.5 mid 90's with 10" set back, i will have 9 1/2" when i add my Sea Star 4" mechanical i ordered. i have good props, but this pic was with my modified 200 hp with cut heads but still best of 77 mph at like 6,100 rpms with i think? my 30" DAH cleaver he made more bow lift, amazing for a Cleaver.
i also have a 29" Mazco Re3 and Allison cut 28" (big ear) and i never got to run them?
Recently we sold that motor, end of season, and put a nice fresh 2.4 Brideport carb, 1990, we unfortunately only ran 81 mph with a very hard to spin Mazco Re4 28" i WILL BE SELLING on Scream. A. I must get the Rpm's up, so engine runs strong H.P. and B. i must get more set back i believe, so less trim and more handling, Frank in New York said his Viper was so balanced he could take his hands off the wheel at 90 mph and perfect balance! i dont do that stuff, but that is a balanced boat. We are shooting for mid 80's with 3 to 4 adults, run at 81 mph, since Rpm's were so low. flat out, jack up all the way, but conservative on jack, not bolted super high. only maybe an inch above jack.

You're not getting any rpm because the motor is buried. What gearcase are you running?

right now and last run of season was with a Merc 1:87 Lower and something "similar" to a BOB's, my boat mechanic not sure who made it? and yes motor was buried for initial tests to check fuel pressure, water pressure etc. without scorching it, i can go up more on jack bolts, i might be able get a pic of where it is on jack now on Sunday, if warm in Wi. to show guys here, about how high on pad i ran? can you explain how to straight edge pad for hook? just simple straight edge back 4 feet from drain plug?
I just uploaded a picture taken before we ran the slow 81 mph, i think if you enlarge you can see how low motor was bolted to jack, too bad you cant see pad, but jack is all the way up in this picture with lower unit not Bobs?Last edited by Valero2.5; 03-04-2017 at 09:05 PM. Reason: add picture
