There are a few lakes in Northern Michigan that are very clear but I don't know that any of them beat Tahoe with the Mountains and trees that surround it. Torch Lk., Burt, Mullet, Indian river, Lake Charlevoix, and Harbor Springs are really nice bodies of water and all but Torch lead into lake Michigan which will allow you to go for as long as your heart desires and your savings account will allow. Michigan has a lot of great resources but a very short season for them to be used. Now that I am able to boat year around here in Florida, I have to wait until we pull into one of the springs to experience what we had up north "cold, clear, fresh water". We do however have the keys and once you experience snorkeling places like sombrero reef in 85 degree water you seem to not look back.

I envy the 85 degree crystal clear salty stuff as I am an avid underwater hunter.I do feel blessed as I am one hour drive from Tahoe (most pristine alpine lake in NorthAmer) and two hour drive from ocean. We are real lucky to see are ocean temps ever creep above 55*we also have 1000 miles of protected smooth fresh water Delta only 25 minutes from here that leads all the way to San Francisco bay and beyond.

Be careful scuba diving in Tahoe, you might pop out in Reno.
