The important thing is to use the correct type of products and products that are compatible with each other. I would only use catalyzed primers and finishes. It is true that regular body filler absorbs water. When using a filler you need to know what material you are applying it to. Certain fillers do not work with certain composites. We were always told that automotive finishes are not supposed to be used below the water line. They don't wear as well and may be microscopically porous. So, that may be why you've heard that body filler may not hold up. Chances are you may not have trouble but automotive finish manufacturers will not guarantee it. Customers come to our store wanting imron for painting boats. We were told by the manufacturer that is not a marine finish either. I am no expert on boats, but I've been in the paint industry for a while. I hope I could help a little.
That's the best answer I have seen to this post and congratulations to you !! obviously you know your stuff and that's really important !!
Messing round with boats is fun !! the learning never stops ,even after more than 30 years there's always something new happening somewhere ! BUT somethings never change and some problems never go away and just keep reoccurring !!so moved into Composite Forensics , Now that something completely new !!

Thanks. I was by no means trying to argue, just sharing a few of my experiences. When we all share our wisdom we can help each other out. I know you guys have been helping me a lot! Lots of good help on here.

Another factor about moisture intrusion is how long it's exposed. A trailer queen vs a moored boat. A few hours each trip in the water vs "other".

Data sheet on the 3M Marine filler. http://multimedia.3m.com/mws/media/1...-tech-data.pdf

    3M
    TM
Marine Premium Filler is a unique vinyl ester
formulation designed for marine filling and fairing
applications above or below the waterline. 3M
    TM
Marine Premium Filler is a unique and easy to sand
    formula designed with 3M
    TM
    Scotchlite
    TM
    Glass Bubbles.

Pricey...but maybe worth the cost. Wonder if this would work as a bedding compound for stringers? Vinyl ester and glass bubbles?

I wish it weren't 20 degrees outside, reading everything makes me want to get sanding. Hell, I even bought an auto rotisserie for my old vette, but I was thinking it would make it a lot easier to sand the bottom of this tiny boat as well. Just have to figure out how to mount it.
If I don't ask any questions, I'll never learn anything.

I prefer the 68 to 72 myself. Mine just happens to be a 1968 with a lot of one of a kind custom mods. All Old School, like a time capsule. just the way I want it. If I wanted a slammed to the ground vette, with rubber band tires and wheels I'd buy a Z06.

well you need to read some important ones !!'Q cells and Glass bubbles are for fillers to make then easy to sand and have little to no strength at all !They should never be used for anything structural any where at any time regardless what they are mixed with !

Sweet. I like old school. Any mods on my car are period correct. Kind of a "day 2" car.

Being this is the fiberglass section, I guess I can post a photo being the car is fiberglass right? . Car has some history behind it. Which makes it cooler to me. This is what I consider Old School and its gonna stay this way.
