What grit prep for gel coat non-skid

Im re-doing the nonskid on the deck of my project boat. Going with gelcoat and a non-skid additive rolled on. Nothing fancy but want good adhesion. Im thinking 220 grit since its going to be a coarse finish anyway.

No expert here but I would think something all the way down to a 30 or 36 grit would make for a better bite

I usually prep for gell with 80 grit. Gell is fairly thick and needs a good deep scratch. imo 36# is a bit too heavy and will show up in the finish. I used the dura tec add. and rolled on a med coat of gell to color/cover and followed up with a 2nd coat with the non skid particles.

I may have some pics, but have no idea on how to post them. Maybe when the kid comes over I can get him to do it...

Kids are Great what age? about 10 or 12.

Do you use a textured roller or smooth and rely on the add-a-rock?

    Thanx

My kid is 29, and that makes me older than dirt... The smooth 1/4'' nap rollers work good. I use the awlgrip coarse size grip tex. Idea is to color/cover the surface, let that set up and then add the texture agent to the colored surface. This material can be added directly to the gell or sprinkled over the wet gell and then rolled over with another layer of gell. The clear dura tec makes the gell thinner and hides less than straight gell. Sometimes it takes 3 coats to get the surface texture you are looking for. Makes a nice, shiny, easy to clean surface. Adding wax leaves the surface hard but has no gloss and is hard to keep clean.

You can spray the stuff too, but that needs lot's more prep work. Will give a mold quality texture to the boats decks tho.

80 Grit should be fine.......Larger grit will leave marks and finer grit will not give enough rough surface for adhesion. Gel is thick unlike Automotive paint and covers better over a rougher surface.

If you have stress crack, spider webbing be sure to grind then out and repair with Chop Strand or it will just come back.
