Painting over gelcoat

Gidday guys

Apologies in advance for what may be a simple question.
A few years ago, the gelcoat on my boat got damaged while being transported. It got repaired, in my opinion roughly, and i am thinking about just getting the whole thing repainted. So, in short, what's involved in painting over gelcoat, and what is the paint of choice? Boat is on a trailer, stored under cover when not in use.

The awlgrip/awlfair paint system is good. Dupont Imron is also a real tough paint. With either one you will need to repair/sand the surface, epoxy prime, sand, and apply 3 coats of paint. Neither one is gonna like to stay wet for any long period of time. I prefer to have the hull bottom stay gellcoated for water resistance and then paint the hull sides and deck surfaces.
