Have a laptop question
One of my brothers desktop died and he's looking at getting a low price laptop to hold him over until he gets a new desktop. He's looking at one that has only 4GB of ram to me that isn't enough but would it be for just going online, paying bills and basic program operations?
It's just going to be used until he get's a new desktop comp. and then will serve as a backup type role. Is only 4gb going to slow things down a lot or not?
Price is 229.99

Dump any and all bloatware, don't install a bunch of programs and it should be fine for basic services.

I agree with getting rid of anything not needed. I also suggest for people (like me) that don't like Win 10. You can download a free app, it was even at Microsoft's site for awhile. Its called Classic Shell. You can turn the lay out of Win 10 into the look and feel (use) of previous versions of Windows like even Win 95, if you want.
Id also look at Lenovo laptops. They are usually in the low price range. But are very durable and even easily repairable. I use one for travel because, I've lost Lap-Tops.

Check out the Lenovo 310 Ideapad, no frills but has a lot of memory and even has a built in dvd drive. About $375.

You know what is scarey. A very few years ago 4 gigs of RAM and 500 gigs of memory was unheard of. Remember looking at the box for my first computer still sitting in my attic (and it was not in the earliest days)--4 gigs of hard drive!

I built my own desktop 6 years ago, Asus solid cap board, i5 2.8, 16 gig ram dual channel, G-force graphics, 500GB main, 4TB storage...... still running strong. I don't like any of-the-shelf crap, better building my own with top shelf parts. Still debating whether to stick with win7, go with Win10 or go with something different like RedHat etc. Right now, it's running fine and free.

FlaBum--My wife has Win 10, and I inherited a Surface from her with it. I am an old codger set in his ways, but I hate Win 10 (I currently use 7). You can get it to show you a desktop a little more like 7, but I still can't figure out how to exit from a program (no X in the upper right corner) among many other things. I think there is an old thread from around when it came out on here you might want to read to get a variety of opinions.
By the way, your computer sounds real fancy, and I fully understand in other areas that you can build something way better than off the shelf, but I only recognized about half of those words so I guess I am stuck with off the shelf.Per Rock:

my Lenovo laptop has Win10, but I still use Chrome browser in it like on my Win7 machine. I set the laptop up to look and act similar to Win7 and uninstalled all the gadgets and programs I didn't want. Thing about Win10, the rumor is that there will be no more new Windows versions, just updates and soon they will start charging an annual fee like with their Office products. It's all about money. They will also stop updates to Win 7 and force you into Win10 (like Obimbocare)

I guess I scared him cuse he went with a referb laptop with 8GB of ram.
Funny thing is I looked at the specs of my laptop and I only have 4GB of ram; got it back in 08. I really thought I had more ram or I wouldn't have asked the question. They say the memory is the first thing to go...
I can honestly say I don't notice any performance problems even having 10+ web pages open at one time. But I do run Ghostery and it helps a bunch. Without it there is no way I could have that many windows open at one time.
I don't really run any demanding games on this laptop so...-----------------------

4 gig of RAM is fine so long as your'e not gaming or running heavy programs like video editing and such. Most of the people just surf the web or play stupid online games. I put a lot of memory in mine because I set it up as an entertainment computer that I store hundreds of movies on and have it hooked up to the TV to watch them on as I surf the web etc..... I have KODI in it now too along with some memory intensive programs............. but for the average user, 4 gigs is more than enough.
