Cmc actuator rebuild..

Anybody here go through that? Source for parts or a place that specializes in rebuilding them?

I have a 6" I need to get some brushes in also. I had a friend give me a 4" trim plate about 12-13 years ago for my dad's 79 Ranger with an Evinrude 70 hp on it. The brushes started getting jerky and would random work/not work. If you held the switch and tapped on the unit with a hammer or wrench it would work. My father is a retired high voltage electrician and got bored one day and took it apart, he took the brushes with him and ran around town visiting electrician friends/shops and ended up finding some brushes. He popped them in and it worked like new. That was about11-12 years ago and he can't remember where/who had what he needed. I called CMC and they say they have the pumps custom built for them and they are not serviceable and must be bought from them. As much as I would like to have one of the new high performance/fast action pumps, I know I can put some new brushes in and get this thing back in action but I just can't get my arse in gear to take it off the boat and get after it. Maybe someone will chime in and have a source for parts that work.

I went through the same thing with brushes, I had a buddy that rebuilds starters find me some. I think he had to cut some down so they fit. Then my unit started dropping the motor when running the boat, so I took it apart and changed out all the O rings inside. That lasted for 2 seasons, then it started dropping by itself again. So, I changed the O rings again, but it didn't fix it from dropping. I wound up through bolting the unit at the height I run at. Looks like I'm gonna have to buy a new actuator.

Question for the guys that have done brushes. Was the motor running in oil or say a oil filled cavity. Mine had oil in that area that was not contaminated with water like the pump side. Doesn't sound correct but the motor cavity has two plugs in it like a drain and fill ports

Mine was running dry. Do you have the square newer style actuator, or the old style with the pump mounted on the side of the plate? Mine is the new style square 'all in one' unit.

It's square all in one type.

Hmm, mine doesn't have any plugs in the motor compartment like you are describing.

This is what mine looks like, there are no drain or fill plugs on the motor compartment. The drain and fill are at the end of the unit.

That's different from mine, I don't have those plugs. At least I don't think so. And the boats 100 miles away from me at the moment

Of it wasn't for the plugs and the oil not having water in it like the rest it would be be obvious that what I had going on is wrong. I guess the oil could have got by the armature oring long ago, but not had enough time for the water to work in there.

So I'm not sure if anyone is still looking or found and results that work best but I took my actuator to a rebuild shop and they couldn't find brushes to match but sent me to a place close by that can make them. I took one to them and they quoted me $40 a set to get them made. I'm going to get a few sets made and keep them for back up. Does anyone else need some?

Can you provide us with the contact information for this place? I still need some but money is super tight right now so it will be a while before I am able to get some.

I think I'm going to get a batch made and see who might need them later. From what I know the minimum order needs to be $120 so to order them individually wouldn't make sense. So I think I'll order 6 sets hold on to them till someone needs them or I have back up. If I run out I can always get an order together for more too.
