you can end up with a phenomena that you lock in the orange peel under the top coat
its better to spray it over a smooth even base, so covering repairs and achieving finish results in one shot is tough for what you want. If you were just doing black, white, it might be easier
spray some clear, get a handle on it, then try the 50/50. they also sell a clear that might be better suited for topcoat but I have no first hand use to offer any advise. Only what they show "on paper" http://atlcomposites.com.au/icart/pr...%20904-061.pdf

With 15-18 min gell times @ 77 deg., it would keep you running spraying it. Might be a good product for final topcoat. I have never used it.

about the same for regular gelcoat

i personally dont get the fascination with full gel resprays, but thats another topic of discussion

Rob, what is your preference with flake refinish, gell or paint?

i dont get much call for that, but it would depend on color of flake and what the owner wanted. How the boat will be stored when not in use. Solid colored flake really limits what you can do but once that flake is mixed or has some silver in it its an easier job but still time consuming

I prefer for someone to get a superior more easily repaired finish so for that its paint

Its one thing for a guy in his garage to spend a few days sanding and polishing its another to hand someone a bill for it.

When i sprayed mine i left the bodywork sanded to 100 grit for a better mechanical grip . For the base coat i shot it with a 2.5 mm hvlp full flow no fan at 55 psi with the gel (unwaxed) thinned with 10% duratec and catalyzed to no less than 2% mekp , i mixed 16 oz batches so i didnt have that crap kickin in the gun . It left plenty of orange peel which is good for the flake to make facets .
When i shot the flake i used a dump gun and straight clear gel at 2% mekp . It took almost 5 pounds of flake to get the cover i was looking for and again i mixed small batches 20 oz . Then i buried the flake with straight gel ( it takes a lot of gel to bury flake ) and you will end up with orange peel . After i got a +/- 30 mill build up i shot a final 50/50 clear gel and duratec to cure the surface .
After i let the clear cure i sanded the whole surface with 120 grit to remove the orange peel , then i shot one coat of 10% duratec thinned clear with a 2.5 mm hvlp at 2% then the final coat of 50/50 gel / duratec . Then i got busy sanding starting with 320 wet dry all the way up to 2000 before i started buffing . Gil
