Anouther NEWBIE needing advice grom the PRO'S

I bought a 20' 83 VKing about 3 weeks ago. It's in the boat shop getting new floor, transom and paint. What is the smallest motor can I power it with and still have fun. I need a new jack plate, what off-set is recommended. THX

Hard to go wrong with a 225 pro max.Not sure that any set back would be needed.

It would be fun with a 150 V6. That would be my minimum. But a Promax 225 would be more fun. I switched from 150 to PM a couple of years ago.

If it's 20ft as you stated it would be a Vulture, a Viking is 18ft. I would think minimum 200hp. There is some good info here http://www.hydrostream.org/Specific%...ls/Vulture.htm

Thanks for the info. Got a lot of work to do on it. Steering cables, seats, etc. I will post some pics later. I am open to any suggestion and all the advice I can get. THX

MXZ, you are correct it is a Vulture not a VKing. Guess I will be driving a BUS. The website was very helpful.

Without a fresh/dry core, performance will be poor with any motor because the hull will deform at speed. If the transom was bad the core for sure is long gone unless it was done previously. Vulture can run pretty decent with a 150, just needs to be a dry, light core and run extra long setback; 12-14 inches.

I had a Canadian Vision edition with a 135hp, was running 70 mph easily with 6'' of setback.
One very important thing if $$ is no object, get an hydraulic steering, these beast have a tendancy to pull hard on the wheel when running at high speed and the effort to steer it is not interesting at all.

If torque steer is that severe then the boat is simply not working properly. Not only is it not working properly, but there is a great deal of parasitic loss from running the lower unit in a crabbing fashion through the water. I am not against power steering, but if you are using it because the boat is unbearable to drive without it, then it is not at maximum efficiency. I can drive my Vking with one hand with the prop shaft an inch over the pad and standard dual cable steering. Don't band aid drivability issues, solve them, and in the end the boat will be much faster and easier on parts.

I tried boats that were capable of running close to the three digits and I am not saying that it was unbearable, it,s just anoying and are more prone to turn one way compared to the other way..

may be, way back than, i was not as '' sharp '' on the setup as I am now AND that the torque on the engine meant that I was not up to the best. may be.

I am not a '' wizz '' in HST's neither but, IMO, hydraulic steerings are more fun to ride than cable ones and I am not going to step back to cable in order to find out if my setup is better on the steering torque. No thanks.

The Vision Hydrostream I had was also '' anoying to drive, even with dual cables...not that I could steer it, just that It needed an extra effort.

    Sorry If I was misunderstood.

Don't know why u tried so hard to sell me on hydraulic when i said i have nothing against it. I'll say it again, don't use it to band aid a poor handling boat.
