Hydrostream Valero YT setup help
I have a 1988 all Hydrostream Valero YT with a 2001 Mercury 225 Promax on it (pretty sure it's stock). I am running a 32 Pitch Ron Hill Cleaver. I have a 6" jack plate on it a 2 to 1 gearcase and I'm maybe 1/2" to 1" below the pad. It runs a little over 92 mph at about 6500 rpms. Just curious if there was anything else I could do to get some more mph out of it or is 92 mph pretty much it for my setup?
Any my advice is appreciated.

I always felt 12" of set back really makes these hulls run.

Is that gps speed? I only ask as it is only 2% slip. I would think 1.75 lower gears would work better on that combination but have not personally run it. A little prop work should get you 2mph, you could also try a set of Bobs machine 2" spacers on the back of your jack plate and see how it runs. If you still have much positive trim at full speed it should help.

Yes it's gps speed. The Mercury racing prop slip calculator app says that it's 6.37% slip. I have 2" spacers on a 4" jack plate now. I'm trying to find a 1.87:1 gearcase to try instead of my 2:1 to see what that does. I have been hearing that I can still go up quite a bit with the motor and that should help some.

I have had several YT's and you can run at least level with the bottom (depending on your prop)and since your in Florida I highly recommend Remco(Eugene Robertson) props. He has forgotten more than most of us will ever know about setting up a YT and does great prop work. My first experience with him took my first YT from 95 to 103 after he worked the same prop. He is in Lake City Florida

I have seen a few OMC SRX prop's he has done, he does nice work My bad on the slip calculation, I typed 2.1 instaed of 2 for the gear ratio lol senior moment. I would see if you could borrow a 1.87 lower and see how it runs.

I'm running a Ron Hill 32 cleaver on it now. I'm trying to find someone close to me to trade my 2:1.

I only run 5.5 inches setback on my Vking YT. Always have to ask with these boats if you are sure or have addressed the core. The sponsons can hold a ton of water in the foam and a old core will deform at high speed. I have a friend with almost the same boat as yours and same motor and his performed exactly the same and it was soaked. Boat looked mint but delaminated this past year. I recored mine and took care to make it as light as I could with still having a floor and carpet in it and it runs 104 with a built OMC. My best is with a stock 32 Mazco cleaver, but the motor wants still more prop, at least a 34. My speeds also went up considerably after getting a lower unit worked by Titus. There is alot to be said for the profile of the lower unit. It is every bit as important as the prop. Hull, prop, lower unit, etc.....it all has to work as a whole system.

It's an all original boat and I have been all over the it, there isn't a soft spot anywhere on it. I have also cut out sections of floor under both seats to look in there and it's perfect. It belonged to and old man that had it forever and it wasn't used much or abused at all. It spent most of its life out of the water in a cover boat lift. I think mostly I just need to tweak the set up some more. Personally I have no interest in re-coring it. That's too much work and I'd just as soon let it sink and get an Allison.

That's a poor attitude.

The pay off isn't worth the reward when I can get an Allison, go faster and not have to worry about it. I have a buddy that is re-coring a V-King for someone right now and it cost a lot of money not to mention seeing him grinding on all that fiberglass all I can think is "screw that". I did that enough on airboat hulls,I'm not doing it to this one. I bought it because the price was right, not because I have any sort of a love for Hydrostreams.
