    Maximum Pyrometer reading

I have an Allison 2003XB with a 225HP Super Magnum Mariner engine. It is a fresh rebuild. The ECU is a stock R32 except the limiter has been raised to 7,600 RPMs. I have pyrometers with the probes positioned in the outlet ports in the bottom of the block. When running loaded with a 30P prop, what would be the maximum temp you would want to see. I have the 260 style fuel system with adjustable regulator. Thanks for your help.

I don't let mine run over 1175,that should be a little cool.I mite be wrong here but I think 1250 is what is considerd max.

I have the same setup and routinely see1300 wot with no problem. With the pyros in the ports using the exhaust divider bolt location, the numbers are usually higher than what is typical in one pc plate.

Thanks for your replies, men. 1300 degrees makes me really uneasy. Are you using a stock ECU?

I have used a stock ECU, I now use a Brucato with a curve that we developed using a dyno. Both have 7600 limiters. It never gets quite to 1300, but it gets close. The cooler bank stays below 1250. The guys doing the tuning were not concerned with these numbers and they are very experienced...I trust their judgement.

So is the actual temp your not wanting to go over determined after tuning by looking at the piston wash pattern? Then this number (say for example it's 1250) becomes for base line to watch while running?

    Or ?

Never run pyros before, but will have them on my V-King. Actually don't even have them yet but will when the boat is ready.

    Thank you.

i regularly see high numbers .....brucato tune for a pmax....probes in bottom of divider....

tuning by piston tops .....i always have high numbers(in the 12's)

Are those numbers you are comfortable with for a mile or two?

My sample is taken from the plate, numbers taken from the divider (rifle bolts) may read 50 or so degrees hotter. That would put me @1225 or so.Not getting every last oz of power but safe!I think the main thing is to get your piston and plug color right, then read your temp. Now you got a baseline!

1200 degrees is max, but if the motor is rich, the numbers will go higher because you are reading flame. I had them on a stock 300 promax awhile back, was seeing 1400, and looking at the piston tops motor was rich. egt is good for a tuning reference but not the endall for tuning, as the motor can be lean and you'll see numbers below 1200. use the piston tops and egt to tune, not just egt. once the motor is setup the egt really shouldn't change, and if it does something is going on, and you need to check it. as for the brucato stuff, get wot set first and then start on the midrange cruise, I'm doing a couple now on 2.5's that the mid cruise is running 1350 plus and its rich, which can be tuned out.

Agree with mrcrsr 100%. I use mine more as a quick reference tool to let me know if I'm in the ballpark with tune, then I read pistons and plugs for fine tune. I have also seen some pretty scary numbers but had to be flame roll out. They also work nice to determine which side may have issue. IMO if I was setting up for river running or lake cruzin I would prob shoot for the 1100-1150 range. You may be leaving a few HP on table but I would rather do that then melt down. But be carful because I have learned the hard way if numbers are to high from lean by the time you catch it on EGT it can be to late.

thanks for all the opinions and comments. Keep them coming - can't say too much on this issue. I only have three hours on my 225 Super Mag rebuild with new Pro Stock fuel setup. I'm using an adjustable regulator and at 48 pounds with the stock R32 brain with raised limiter, I have run it up real quick to 7,000 twice and both times it has gotten a little over 1,150 and was climbing when I backed off. I guess I can raise it on up to 50 or 52 psi and see if it cools a little.

So far I have only run a 27 pitch prop since the rebuild.

If you're using the stock ecu and 48 psi of fuel pressure it's probably rich. Best to tune looking at the plugs after making a hard run.

I am using a stock R32 ECU at 48 psi and getting readings of 1,200 degrees. I tried 52 psi and the temp dropped 50 degrees. Next I am going back to 48 psi, run it, and if the temp is at 1200 or so I will go down to 46 psi and hysee what the temp is there. I will continue that scenario until I have all my
rpms back or temps get to 1250, whichever occurs first. The limiter in the
    ecu is at 7,600 rpms.
