My first new one was an 89' pro-comp with a 200 on it. The dealer drilled the exhaust, put a set of reeds in it, took .0025 off the heads, added a lower water pick-up and I ran that boat non-stop for 3 years. I had as much or more fun with that set up "similar to what you appear to have" as I have with any of the boats that I have since owned. You will quickly become addicted to what these little hulls are capable of-get ready for the fun to start. Is this one an 86 or 87?

Congratulations. You are now headed in the right direction. Your heads will be done this week. Make sure you get that thing safe before you get it wet. Don't let the excitement bite you in the butt.

word of warning
I owned a 1989 STV exactly like yours. It was my first fast boat (100+). I was a rookie. One day I was not paying attention and stuffed it in a pontoon boat's wake (swell) at 65 mph. Boat sunk like a rock. No flotation.
Just a word of caution: keep the nose up!!! The nose of these older boats is very close to the water. The new ones are a lot higher.
There is no structure in the nose of that boat.
Bought an XR2001 Allison.

I own an 87 with a Bridgeport. Really fun boat. Topping out around 110MPH witha 29 Mazco RE.

Yes, it spoiled my day, but I didn't get hurt. Ended up with an Allison XR2001.
My STV had a Bridgeport EFI. Ran 104 with a 28 Hoss Triton. A fun boat, but a novice can get into trouble real easy. On my very first run, I looked down at the speedo and I was going 90 mph and had no idea where the trim was.death is certain; life is not

Very quick boats, but not exactly the safest boat if going too fast in choppy water.
i would totally fill the front with a water proof expanding foam, it would give flotation plus a bit of a crash pad if the worst should happen.
they do look good on smooth water gunning it.

Choppy water not the problem. Wind gusts are!

Nose high + wind gust = blow over. Nose down + rollers = stuff. Not recognizing what you need to do in the various conditions possible is a recipe for disaster no matter what you are driving. Ya gotta know your limitations and your boats limitations or you will end up with a ruined day. Keaten you need to drive this thing, once it is all assembled correctly with all safety related items in place, like you are scared to death till you get the feeling you can't be stopped. Respect what ya got and you will have a ball. Just take your time and remember ya got a wife and kids at home and they need dad. That's the real stuff, this is just for fun. You have the ability and intelligence to make this boat an impressive, safe ride. There are a lot of people here with lot's of sperience so take advantage of it. Enjoy.
