Mercury 1000 BP ????
Hello,
I've recently come across what the seller is calling it a normal Mercury 1000 Inline 6 outboard. From what I've seen, the mid section looks to be a BP mid with an adapter to a normal lower unit. The cowling looks to be 80's vintage. It has the white 1000 sticker on top, and the lower 100 decal below the bottom pan. The seller says the serial number on the mid is missing. The block is labeled "836-3260" and "TIGER." From what I've researched this corresponds to the 89.6cu in 100hp block.
I've been looking through old posts regarding 1000bp's, but haven't found a definitive answer in whether the block is any different from the regular 100. If it is different, how could I tell the difference, and would it really matter today with how old it is?
Thanks in advance for any help. Please feel free to be blunt and honest with me, and let me know if anything I've said is incorrect. I always love learning more about these old awesome engines.

I could be wrong but I thought the 1000BP was a studs down midsection, unique to 1968 only.

Both types sold as 1000BP's ... and at least one batch of stock powerhead motors with no special porting or rev limiters. Merc had overproduced the BP mid and conflatguration foot and was dumping them. The motor Tom is thinking of is the real race motor, the 1000SuperBP, but it was not the exclusive bearer of the studs up mid. The 1000SuperBP would have a significantly different block than is shown in the pics.
This could be one of the dumped motors adapted to a std gearshift foot. Without a matching serial number plate on the clamp bracket and the motor, the mid is all that's left of any value regardless of whether this was originally one of the dumped factory motors or parts put together at a later date.

Merc put block serial numbers 2 places over the years. I don't know when they switched. Originally they were on the top of the block behind the flywheel, later they were on the boss/arm that holds the distributor. So you have to remove the top cowl to see them in either case. Merc serial numbers were stamped into the aluminum, not a raised number like the casting numbers we see on these pics. Those are just in house foundry reference numbers for the raw casting.
It would be interesting to know what year that block is ... 1968 starts with 2318586

Is there any benifit to using this mid instead of a normal short 15" mid for regular lower units? I've currently got a short mid and a 1500xs lower unit I was planning on bolting up to a 1350.

Cthe BP mid gets points for coolness, but it really doesnt offer anything over the stock 15 inch mid. You have the choice of rubber or solid mounts with the stock mid where you have only solid for the BP? Also got the extra piece in the adapter that has to be used on the BP. Really up to you.

I have a 1350 block where the serial number is stamped on the inside radius of the starter top mount. Had to remove the starter to see it.

The 1968 1000 and 1250 BP engines were the cross flow block and the 1969 Super BP engines used the direct charged block which was standard on 1150 and 1350 engines in 1970. One difference was the starter bracket. The 1250 was bolted on and the 1350 was cast. 1969 production engines still used the none direct charged block.
68 DSH's were different in that the GC studs were in the housing and the 69 they were in the gearcase.
I thought I posted this prior but the serial numbers are
1968, 1000BP serial numbers = 2399723 to 2399822.
1968, 1250BP serial numbers = 2400058 to 2400307.
1969, 1000 Super BP, RH serial numbers = 2641855 to 2641939.
1969, 1000 Super BP, LH serial numbers = 2641940 to 2641954.
1969, 1250 Super BP, RH serial numbers = 2641955 to 2642204.
1969, 1250 Super BP, RHL serial numbers = 2642205 to 2642229.
1969, 1250 Super BP, LH serial numbers = 2642230 to 2642354.

The 1000 and 1250 were built in Fond du Lac using standard serial number sequences. The TII and TIIX were built at HPP. They didn't follow production serial number sequences. I think they are available but not sure why it is relevant. They were totally separate from production numbers. The 1000 and 1250 could be confused with production engines. As we see in this post.

How did you do that? Over the years I experienced most of the usual Mercury failures with the exception of reed valve breakage. I never saw a failure of a shaft housing.
