Need info on 2017 Merc 4 stroke 150- dealers are offering at under 11K
There are offers out there for new 2017 in the box 150hp 4 stroke merc at 11k- 3 year warranty- shipping extra of course- no controls and no props I am sure.
This is mighty temping- I know nothing about these motors- I have been a 2.5 lt 2 stroker for some years now- but may have to join this century.
What can anybody allow about these motors? Known problems?? I don't suspose my existing controls would be compatable.....
Thanks

Good engine, developed as a plug and play replacement for Optimal etc owners wanting to go 4stroke without the complexity or expense of the Verado. We had a pair on a demo boat and I liked them a lot. Smart craft compatible.

Have some fishing guide buds running them with no issues. Have good low end, cruise well mid range, and decent top end for a 150. Low maint. motor. Fuel consumption is a little higher than I expected. But not using 2 str. oil makes up for that I suppose. Being very quiet is the real forte' of this motor.

How would the Merc 115 4 stroke compare to a 115 HO Etec? My 115 HO seems like a beast but I have no experience with the Merc.

Not really comparable. the brp is stronger since it's not a 4str. Now, a merc 115 opti vs a e-tec would be more fair.

I don't post much, but both of my brothers own the 150 4s, and I have the 90. We all grew up on a steady diet of Merc 2 strokes and none had any experience with the new breed 4 strokes. All I can offer having run them for a while now, is we were all surprised with the performance, fuel economy, quietness and smoothness of these engines. Their 150's are on 21 and 20 foot center consoles. My 90 is on an 18'CC.
On the 21', it replaced a 150 Merc 2 stroke. The new 150 performs on par with it, does it quieter and with a lot less fuel. The other two boats were new, not a re-power of an existing boat, but they perform equally well.
My .02 for what it's worth.

I've run the Merc 150 4S for the past 2 seasons- it replaced a 2002 Opti 150 that I had zero issues with over the years. I was skeptical about the 4S, but changed my mind after running it for a few hours. Compared to the Opti, it's quieter and smoother running. Top end appears to be identical- so it's making as much power as the old Opti. Fuel usage is around 5% higher than the Opti. It has a single stage cooling system so there is no poppet valve to worry about getting clogged- nor the intake screen for the compressor that has caused many Opti's to die a quick death from compressor failure. I can idle/slow cruise up speed limited channels without any overheating or plug fouling issues- I pulled the plugs after 2 seasons and they still looked great. The only complaint I have concerns what is called a "prop sleeve bushing"- a silly little plastic spacer that snaps into the open end of the lower unit bullet. I run Trophy Plus props and it seems that the exhaust gas flowing over the prop hub softens the bushing until it comes out and jams on the prop hub. Luckily it's only a $4. part from Merc, but after going thru 4 of them in 2 seasons I just left it out. Merc claims this is for preventing weeds from going around the prop shaft- but it would be nice if they knew how to design a plastic part correctly. Some of the bass boat set have tried heating the snap in sections with a lighter and bending the tabs out in an attempt to make the bushing stay in place- but the jury is still out on whether this works or not. In general, maintenance on the 150 4S is much less than on the Opti. All in all, I feel that the 150 4S is a great engine. My GF has run a 2015 Merc built 115 4S for 2 seasons- and it runs just as good as my 150 4s- so I think Merc has built 2 really nice engines for replacing the 2S models. At least when I need to smell the 2 stroke oil I can still get my fix from my old 15 Merc, or my even older Merc KG4 Hurricane.

Thanks Gents-
I need to call these dealers and find out what the bottom line really is- I am sure there will be some extras-
Really curious how warranty would be handled if I have it shipped and I install.

Jaco's is in Tenn. I believe. They must install the motor, but have some of the best prices out there.

They make adapters.
Also it is not 2017 so they are not able to produce 2017 year build date motors yet, you do understand that you will be receiving a 2016 or older motor right?
I can do the same deal and upgrade your warranty to 5 years for $250. I am located in Fort Mill, SC.

Did not know that.... I guess you are a dealer...(I can do the same deal and upgrade your warranty to 5 years for $250. I am located in Fort Mill, SC.) Good dealer too, sounds like.
You might think about getting a dealer membership here.
