the problem with the 400 is the gear case, the dimensions will give a small boat like a 21' issues as far as speed the Aussies are saying they do better with a 300xs on those Velocitys there have......thats why guys have tried sporties but they can't handle it,

    Great thread.

    Thanks for sharing.
I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.

I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

Yes that's what Brent said when he ran one on his 21 lcb. He refused to do the research on props Merc had no interest in helping either.

Hydro-Tec built a ported big bore 3.0 Merc with a 3.2 crank displacement was around 3.6. It would turn a 1.62 and 36p prop to 7500 in short order but the 3.0 sporty couldn't put up with it. It kept pushing the pinion out the side of brand new sportys.

Bravo would be easy to convert but the lower gears are the same for 1.65 and 1.50 so the 1.5 is done by making a gear change in the upper unit.

Through my experience with the etec I found them to be great motors with a half a turn from the fly wheel there running, fuel and oil efficent like no other motor, durable, reliable, just all around a great ob, the fly in the ointment is the gear case, although they are far more robust than the mercury cases, just compare the gears, the housing diameter, kills the top end......sorta like the case on the merc 400's.......if I wasn't looking for the tall numbers I would be perfectly happy with one, although the speeds were acceptable, Im always looking for more, fast forward, here comes the 300xs....if I don't bombarded by certain jerkoffs, Ill post the progress with the 300xs....whats nice is I have the data with the etec, so it should be pretty interesting doing the side by side comparison....

I would be a nice comparison if you could borrow a sportmaster that has been converted to omc and try it out?

the shift linkage is different on the etec it rotates, so there would be some mods needed, yes its been done before, but the Merc just makes more HP

When we are done with the conversion you can swap back to the evinrude case at the boat ramp. No surgury or special tools needed.
