Need advice on good 2-way radios

Does anyone out there know of good 2-way radios available and what would be suitable for boating and/or snowmobiling? I am thinking something along the lines of what motorcyclists use to talk to a passenger. Needs to be helmet to helmet and handheld to helmet and have a half mile to mile range. Only looking for something that is of good quality. Tried working with the $50 store bought hand-helds and they are crap. Quality is bad and range is only really a few hundred feet. Not looking to buy new helmets, just adapt to existing.

    Any help is appreciated.

hey Mark, look at the Sena 10 s, or 20 s bluetooth headsets.some of us have them for motorcycling & they are absolutely the best .have used chatterbox units in the past & after getting the sena 10 s threw the chaterbox units in the trash.also your best handheld units come from Rugged radios.they are what they use at Baja .

    Gary,

Thanks for the info on the Sena products. I assume they work through a cell phone Bluetooth connection? Do they mount in the helmet, or can they be worn independently?

    Thanks!

the Sena headsets mount inside helmets, speakers & mic. the unit mounts on the outside of the helmet, very small & simple to use , can link to phone , other sena units & some non sena bluetooth units.intercom & rider to rider doesn't nee phone. do a search ,all kinds of videos on installing, using & upgrading firmware.

The problem with Sena and all other BT based devices is range. They work great at 1/4 mile and less and really like line of site. Beyond that they are problematic and there's no handheld type option, the units all mount to helmets. I suppose you could fabricate a headset type of unit but it's not a product they sell. Don't get me wrong, the Sena products are one of the best, been using them for years but BT isn't the right medium for what you are looking for.

What you want is GMRS radios. I'd recommend Motorola based units. Don't waste your time with sub $50 units, you get what you pay for and don't waste your time with FRS.
