    Cool 91 mercury 2.5L (carb) 245hp

First off, hello gentlemen of the watercraft world. I'm a new "boot", so apologies if I'm in a wrong area here!

I am hoping to find out as much as I could about my grandfathers engine that I will be purchasing along with his Norris craft.

Its a 19ft 1990 Norris craft with a 1991 carbed 2.5L 245hp (he says new heads on it made it 250hp??) no idea.

    1) where is the best place to find a repair/service Manuel for This engine?

    2) what range of compression should I be checking for?

    3) best spark plug a to use?

    4) what type of mixture/oil and how much, and will it be fine on 93 pump gas? (Or what about 100% gas from weigels?)

5)I think it has teleflex (?) steering? Is that what they would have used on a 245 hp beast back in the day?

6)also it will turn smoothly by hand, it has been sitting for about 10-12 years. Still very very clean condition. Kept out of weather. However it has a Slight tapping sound such as a loose rod cap kind of when wiggling slightly back and forth? Wondering it's that's something else?

I know that's a lot and I'm a newbie demanding answeres but all the help I can get is very much aprriciated! Thanks again gentlemen.

    (1) http://www.ebay.com/itm/MERCURY-Mari...-/131974074280

this one will be really close..(might be as close as ya gonna find) '91 has "pumper" carbs, bottom guided rods/pistons.. rest will be 'bout tha same so applies to your motor..

    (2) 120+.. all close ta tha same whatever it is ta start with.. need a leak down primarily!

    (3) buhw

    (4) 32:1 syn. oil (merc or penn) might start a disagreement here but (brand) your choice, premium fuel

    (5) inspect it all.. no play, nothing worn

    (6) may/may not be "piston rock" at tha top of tha stroke.. can't say ona computer....

JAN... this is not a very good "newbie" motor so you need very careful with any and all information ya gather 'bout it.. ask ?'s on here.. most that answer will know what they are talkin' about but some not so much!

I own one too . BUHW ngk plugs , 93 octane fuel depending on the markings of the cut on top of the heads . 32:1 on oil , dual cable steering or hydraulic sea star steering is what you want . Keep in mind that motor needs new gold rings every 50 to 60 hrs . Do you want to sell it ?

He had new gold rings put in it before putting it away in the building. I would rather sell it and find a good used 2 stroke EFI or preferably 4 stroke.

Right now not too sure, I'm still looking at options. I would like a four stroke but it will cost 5-8 grand. I can't really do that for awhile. Does anyone know how much it cost for a set of rings and best kind to use? (It has gold so I'm told)

Gold rings are what you want. They are expensive. List price at pro marine is $130 a pair. $780 in rings at list price. That motor still could be worth a pretty decent amount, that might be the route you want to go. Also, keep in mind the coating on the cylinder walls must be redone every few rebuilds.

I'm pretty sure the gold color comes from a titanium nitride coating on the rings... they just cost the same as pure gold. LOL

    Thumbs up

Well, what are they going for? Most I've seen would 4,500. That's still only half the cost I'm seeing for a decent four stroke or even a newer 2 stroke. So if I sell it I would be out of an engine for the boat for quite a while. And I don't want that. What about swapping the powerhead? If I keep this engine it won't go above 6,500 rpm's if that and will be just for the weekends. It's definitely not a weekend type engine but I would rather have it then not one at all. Btw thank all you guy's for your input.

I would think that you could sell that powerhead and get a stock 200 in good condition or fresh off a rebuild (no gold rings either!) and maybe even end up with a little cash in hand. The tuner/exhaust plate might need to be changed. Or, sell motor complete, find stock mid nineties/ early 2000's 200 complete and run it. I'm assuming you want something newer than that, but could get the boat on the water for a few years before you go with a fourstroke.
