gentleman, if overall go fast was the goal on this hull and the little unimportant things in life like time, money and reliability were of no significance, would the 2.5 260 efi be the clear merc winner? is there anything more for lite hulls before modifying?

A pro max should get you into the 90's with proper setup and prop on the AE-21 . The 280 should get you tripple digits with a 28 et .

My hst blows out at 86mph with a stock 200. Propshaft 3" below.... Time for a nosecone and jacking it up. Should run 90plus easy i guess.
A light to moderate ae21 should do 90 with a good setup and a promax.
Jupiter: How much rpm's were you running with the 26trophy? Did you try other props too? 26pitch seems small.
Whats a good cruising prop and to carry some weight? I have a 28 chopper and 29 srx. Not great with a heavy load.

No the promax is mercury's user friendly , steel bored, fishin' motor on steroids.needs no special attention to rings and nicasil linings. Needs good hi test gas and good oil to live a long life. If you keep it around 64-6800 rpm, service the injectors regularly, it is a very reliable unit.it's your best bet for an ae21 family/recreational boat. Like jupiter pulsare said, his ran 80 with a 200, so if you're really on a budget , you cant beat a strong 2.5 200 either for fun cruisin. You have all winter to find a good motor, just keep asking questions before you lay your cash down. Alot of very helpful , knowledgeable guys on here.

bigboy, I can't remember exactly what rpm's I was turning but probably about 6400-6600 rpm. It's probably buried in one of my old AE-21 threads. I also ran a DAH worked Mercury Chopper 28 for top end runs. For everyday use with 2 plus people, full tank of gas cooler, gear, etc. I ran the Trophy Plus. It made the boat jump out of the hole and kept the boat on plane at lower speeds.
