Ran that race in a 13' flat bottom Curtis Craft. Nick Chapman thought 1/4" plywood was good enough for the two outside sections of the bottom. When I finished the boat was sinking out from under me. The boat belonged to Nick but the motor and every thing else was mine so I wound up standing in the water on the ramp holding up my motor until Nick and my Dad could help me get it out of the water.

Butch...As you know...Baker's Haulover, in a 41 Apache even, is not for sissy's...lol. Stuffed many boats, of many sizes & styles, going only 30 mph, when the tide is coming or going. Haulover & Boynton are crazy inlets. Both were built entirely too narrow for the flow.

...nice photo Butch. That must be the old pier in the background?

I know it well, and stuffed my 31 Scorpion there once. My parents used to drive us by there in the 40's and 50's when a hurricane was coming. The waves would crash over the road. It's a lot different now.

Dick Spellman won the race in an F Hydro around 59 or 60. Imagine that!

My 59 Gold Coast run in a BU Holt Craft with a 20H split the 1/8" bottom in the bow. Every time I would hit the water with the bow I would get a shower. Treasure got run into a bridge on the north run of the Sandy Shoes once in her Raveau. It split the side in the rear. When she finished she beached it on the sand right next to us. Hasty overnight repairs were junk so we tied up the broken side to the dock and cut her loose for the start on the south run. She finished and I think won the class.

My Dad took my Mom to Haulover to watch me in that race. She was watching the boats go through the cut and when one small boat approached she said to my Dad "look at that little boat. If he can make it Jimmy can". My Dad replied " that is Jimmy". Mom started to cry and hid in the car. Mom only came to one more race after that. Didn't go much better.

Olegator. Did you run the Around Miami Beach race in the Critchfield E class boat? I recall racing against that boat with both you and Felix Poppel in it.

In those days I was too young and stupid to know better. I think that race was the last one.

I am an idiot. I had used my scanner for a magnifier on a couple of photos so no surprise the site would not let me upload 34mb pictures.

Gene. That last picture is a nice one, but very blurry. Its a keeper though. Would it be possible to scan it again with some adjustments taken? Don't know if its blurry for everyone else, or just me. Thanx
