1984 2.4 Mod VP Oval Port Engine Info
I have tons of questions so if anyone has any insight or old memories of these engines of interesting info about these engines, please feel free to share it right here.
I'll share what I know, which is very little but at least its something. I have photos and photo questions.
First off, those brochures you see on line are always Mod VP Bridgeports, not Carburated Oval Port Engines. So they don't really tell the story of Oval Ports.

I want to start out by asking for some very important information as far as I am concerned, at least to me.
My engine has not been started yet, not even for a second. I didn't even put the plugs in it. I want to ask before I wreck it. This engine is sporting 195psi's, maybe even 200. I've never had a motor with this much PSI's. I am sure some of you have, so what are my main concerns with an engine with such high PSI's. Yes, my gauge is accurate, I use it all the time.
I know the wrong brochures say aviation fuel or better and 7k plus for rpms. Well I just filled the tank up with 110 octane race fuel. Did not turn on the electric fuel pump yet either. Now with this much psi's and given the nature of this particular motor, I am assuming its probably an 18 to 1 fuel/oil mixture. Right? Thats right, I forgot to mention that it has factory 26cc heads on it as well. I don't know if factory is better than milled, I just know I was told they are factory. It also has a lightweight flywheel and WH28's with slosh tubes and those uh, uh, divider plate in the bowls, something like that. Factory cross drilled intake, large rectangle exhaust ports.
What kind of RPM's do you think this capable of, or have you heard of?
Anybody know any magic HP ratings. I hear from 220, 252 and even 290hp.
I heard they had high psi's, 195 psi's, wowzers
Electrical side without the electrics, so clean.
Electric side finished
Mechanical side finished

So a while ago i had a post about my piston melting. This was on my other 2.4 oval port.
I took off my CLE to check the water pump and to my shock, I found this deep down inside of there...
I pulled it out and my exhaust was now unplugged.
This was packed tight down there. I don't even know if its from my mid/lower section. I have a two piece mid, everything is tight. I don't know where this exhaust seal would be from, or at least located at. Is it from my motor?
Is it plausible that this blockage caused my motor to get hot and melt a piston? Hmmm

The stator on the mod vp motor has wires showing. my other oval port doesn't. The coils are also different numbers, can anyone tell me if one coil is better than the other. The M 1401 is original to the mod vp and the M 1304 is from the other motor. So I swapped over the entire system instead of taking a piece from here and a piece from there. Was that ok to do? Did the Mod Vp have a better stator or coils or switch boxes?

^^^Does it even matter?
Wires showing, Is this normal?
How about this thing under the stator, it seems melty too me. Is this normal or not?

Thermostat stuff.
My 2.4 Oval Port poppet valve hole looks like this but never had a poppet. Note the 4 dimples in the aluminum to hold the restrictor washer.
My 2.4 Mod Vp doesn't even have a restrictor washer and has never been dimpled. So they want this motor to run cool as possible at all times?
Is this correct then. Top right to top left then down and out and if you look close enough, the poppet thing drains directly out by itself.
I also have these rubber hose looking things that block the water flow around my cylinders, the bottom two on each side. I saw on a parts page that these are factory for the 84' Mod Vp engine. They won't create "hot" spots on my cylinders?

whats tha build date stamp?.. those heads aren't '84... lotta wahers for heads that haven't been cut!... runnin' on tha two piece it needs a poppet and t-stats or washers with 3/8" hole.... its set up for a one piece as it is... still a 200 block so ya treat it as such..
its like a 150/200 pro max only for that merc era.. a naked 200 with some window dressin'.. few things that make it possible ta turn it up a tad....Last edited by tlwjkw; 09-25-2016 at 07:45 AM.

Here are some various numbers either cast or stamped into the engine.
I do notice that in quite a few places that there is a capital S engraved into the crank and cast into the block and intake in a few spots. Makes me wonder if someone was signing the block.
I also notice that with this Mod Vp engine, it shares a lot of the same cast numbers as my 2.4 oval port except that the parts have physical differences which i would think would justify a different cast number.
If you know anything about these numbers, especially the frost plug number and the engine block number, please share your knowledge.
One thing I hate, its a six step process to just upload one single photo and you cannot upload multiple photos at once. This is the part of the process that sucks donkey kong.

I know the heads are from 84' The washers are there because i can't find my shorter head bolts. Good eye.
So I should fill up the poppet valve area with 3/8 fender washers all the way to the cover? Or maybe make a 1/2" thick spacer with a 3/8 hole in it?
Thanks for the help.
