New to forum-3 cyl looper question 15" compatible?

    Hi all,
spent hours learning much from all the forums... What a great place!!
just picked up an '82 75hp evinrude 20" length. I'd like to make a 15" for an 13' Allison project. 15" mid seem pretty scarce, but I came across a 1972 65hp
    65ES 72 S
I'm wondering about the compatability of the '72 exhaust housing-outer and inner and whether it will bolt up to my 1982 powerhead? and also if the 82' (v4 type) foot will fit on the '72 mid as well? If the 72 exhaust inner housing will work, would it be restrictive?
read through lots of posts on the subject but they seem to only confirm 74 and up interchange.
I see the gasket adapter is the same part number 0313736 for both engines. But the actual 'adapter' for the 1972 seems to a part number only compatible up to 73 so I'm a bit confused.
Before I get in over my head and purchase a 1972 15" mid, can someone tell me if I'm heading in the right direction or making a mistake?

Of course on my long term wish list is the nitro foot. But don't know whether that will fit the 72 mid either.
Thanks in advance for your help!

If the gaskets are the same, then the power head should bolt onto the short mid. I don't know if the driveshaft splines are the same though. If you try and run the V4 gearcase, then you're gonna need a 15" driveshaft, and I don't think the one from the 72 will work in a V4 case.

The 72 is electric shift while the 82 is mechanical.

The exhaust housing will fit. The swivel housing will too with some boring to get the shift rod to work as its electric as Racer says.
Some guys on here have done it so hopefully will chip in
2 and 3 cyl gearcase bolt pattern is the same, powerheads are different.
2 cyl driveshaft and spline different than 3 cyl but gearhousing the same.
There was a running change to 3cyl driveshaft spline as well on 20" from 4 to fine spline,15" was always 4 spline.
V4 gearcase is miles away from fitting

Thanks for the replies. Please correct my understanding if I'm not correct on this....
-the '82 powerhead and v4 gearfoot will bolt up to the 72' 15" mid with mod for shift linkage. If so, what would be the disadvantages of using it. I'd go with a bobs low water pickup.
    - the only way to make it work is to have the driveshaft cut and have splines recut?.

    If my understanding is correct,
Is there someone in the Long Island area who is capable of cutting the shaft and splines?
Is boring for the shift rod passage a DIY project?
would I need a doner 15" shift rod or can my 20" be modified to work?

nothing v4 will come close to anything 2/3 cyl
what is close is any 3 cyl 15" can be used, some with a few mods on any 3 cyl before e-tec

Ok. Nothing v4 will fit. Maybe I'm phrasing it incorrectly. I'm asking about the foot in this picture. I thought it was same as a "v4". Probably my lack of understanding. Should have posted the pic first. Will this fit the 72 mid if the driveshaft were to be cut and re splined. Hope the pic clarifies the gearfoot. Thanks again. Click image for larger version.

No nothing except the spark plugs and ignition coils and the prop nut.
Props are the same if we are talking 20" 3 cyl gearbox

powerabout, that's a 3 cyl. club foot he is showing, why wont it fit? Maybe I'm missing something here but seems to me beside the length of the shaft, it's a direct bolt on.

yep your right, it is just a club foot 3 cyl, ( I never zoomed in to the photo) direct bolt on less drive shaft and shift shaft being made shorter, to a 15" mid

Yes, I should have said club foot! That's the one. Can't find a nitro for sale so cutting the shaft is the only option for me right now.
So do I need a doner 15" shift rod or can the 20" be modified? And is there anyone in the Long Island area who might be able to cut and reap line the driveshaft?
Or does anyone want to let go of a mid and nitro foot to help me get this Allison 13r project underway?? Not doing the hull till I know I can power it temporarily with the club but I'd prefer to swap the crank and do it once!!
    Thanks

The Nitro gear foot are out there, sometimes you have to visit the marinas but you can probably pick up a hole motor for the same price. I paid $500 for my last Stinger 2 years ago. You have to act fast when you come across one. As for the shift shaft, you can unscrew it, cut it shorter and cut new threads.
The club foot will somewhat work, the problem will be finding a prop with enough pitch because of the gearing. We run 22" to 24" pitch on the nitro gear case

The club foot has a 2..42-1 gear ratio. You will have to give it a lot of pitch luckaly v4 propellers have a decent selection. The nitro case could have 1 of 3 gear ratios 2.42-1 2-1(Europe seams to have that) 1.87-1 the stinger 15 and buster 15, and the sst60 the only problem is rarity and a some what smaller prop selection. But I'd take one any day! Also the nitro had a smaller diameter.
