SleekCraft, Lavey Craft, Stoker, Hydrostream, Champion, Shadow. ??? HELP ???
Hello,
I'm new to these type of boats, & we live in N.C. so not too many around to look at. I'm trying to find a fun hot boat that would have a good small wake for skiing. Be comfortable cruising at 55 to 70 mph. And be easy to drive at speeds up to 80 or 90 top. IS THIS POSSIABLE? I have never ridden in any of the boats mentioned, so please let me know what you think. I appreciate you help. Ray

I'm partial to the Lavey, as I own one. It pretty much checks all those boxes... though the top speed will be dependent on motor and setup.
I know the Stoker and Hydrostream guys all love theirs too. Probably can't go wrong with any of them.
No experience with the Champion or Shadow.

There is a Lavey I just looked at, what a nice boat. It is a big 21 foot boat.

Thanks for the input. That is a nice looking boat you have, What year is it? And can you show me any interior pictures, or how it sits in water? Thanks

Thanks, sorry for the delayed response. I posted some pics of the new interior on a different thread last year. Page 24:

I'm sure I have more pics from this summer too if you want to see something else.

I am most likely buying a 21 I/O with a whipple charger on the motor.

What is the budget? Grand sport would be very good. For me the 20' plus boats have too much wake for skiing.

Budget would depend on boat/engine year and condition, Probably as low as 12,000. up to 30,000. if boat is awesome, & engine is newer. I test drove a 21 checkmate and was really turned off with the chine walk in the mid 70s and above, so the allison would probably be in the same category. Plus the turning capability of a tunnel sounds appealing.

If you experienced that sort of thing, it needs some setup help. I have a 21' Checkmate Pulsare that runs in the low 80's, and have no such problems. I'm going to sell soon, because it's more boat than I need on the small lake I go to. But honestly, it's a closed bow, and I think you would need more cockpit room if skiing is your thing. I don't ski anymore, but I'm thinking if I did, my primary concerns would be plenty of room with an open floor plan, and a low freeboard (ease of exit/reentry). And I suppose, wake characteristics.
The Lavey's I've seen look like nice boats.Barry

Most of the MODVP style boats actually don't have much of a wake at least the ones I have skied behind. Any 80 MPH boat needs to be properly learned to do so in a safe manner, true V's tend to take more time. A couple of the boats you mentioned were at least partially derived from a Stoker.

If you want a small wake, the Stoker's wake is no bigger than a flat bottom boat and easier to get in and out of than the Lavey's. The extra room in the Lavey is nice.
