we had to recore one that had never been in the water, never had an engine drilled
chopper gun construction, there are places that barely have a layer of resin over the core never mind any fiberglass or chop
places where water can sit, combined with almost bare balsa is not a good recipe.
also consider that all the core is placed in the boat at once and chopper gun over, so once one area starts to get wet the rest acts like a sponge.
The backside of the wood for the deck does not even have resin on it, it has wood sealer like you would put before you stain a piece of wood. it almost smells like kerosene. And its entirely covered. My theory is someone at the factory probably rolls entire sheets of plywood before they are even cut up, they lay them in the boat, chopper gun over the top

No one is blaming a previous owner, its just going to happen

Thanks Rob. It's anybody's guess and I am certainly not pointing fingers. We are just discussing rotten core science. Now that the core is exposed it's a relief. You will fix it right and I'll be happy with a solid boat.

parts of that one didnt even have resin over it, all hidden by the floor
upholstery was still in plastic with the mounting hardware taped to the bottom, they were never mounted, bolsters never mounted still in the bags. this was in 2010

What led you to check the core with such a remarkable find? I mean, if I had a piece of core in my living room for decades I don't believe it would degrade a whole lot.

The owner asked me to cut the floor and check.
i doubt the boat spent its entire life indoors, at some point imsure it got left outside, got hosed out, washed

skaters get it too and they are hand laid vacuum bagged epoxy boats, but inner skin is thin and plenty of places for water to sit ,it penetrates from the inside
just looked at a 24 guy bought it sight unseen and now has a mess on his hands

One way to prevent water penetration is to paint white waxed gell over any area with core. You can see any hole and fill it with the gell.

Well, I finally have progress to report. The core is done. There's some other work still to be done on the hull, but I will be home before November in time to play with it all winter.Click image for larger version.

Very nice work. Any idea as to how much weight it gained in the reconstruct. Only reason I ask this is, I believe the factory had a very strict weight goal and it shows by the lack of glass in certain areas where we would add material when doing it over. I know my ''83'' V-King prob was a more robust boat as it had glass over all the wood. It was built for a V-6, so weight wasn't as big a deal. The Vipers were made for the IL-6 and 4 cyl motors, so they had to be light to perform. Will be a beauty when done i'm sure.

That's a great question that I don't know the answer to. My instructions were to make the boat structurally sound and sealed up tight so it would last forever. I don't want to go through this twice. I probably gained some weight but I am willing to take the trade off. I'm running a 1500XS which weighs under 300 lbs (253 according to John Tiger) so I save some weight over a V6 there. I'm hoping the boat will run mid to upper 70s. We'll see. I know I'll be happy in the end.

Better to add some glass, I agree.... Weight won't matter in the end. I would guess, maybe 50#s at most. But it will last a lifetime. A Viper, 1500xs and a 28p chopper back in the day was a potent lil rocket. Maybe 80mph with just 6 gals, batt and a driver. I had a 15' Allison with a 1500XS back in "78" and the Vipers would run right with me. And that Allison was a real tater chip.
