What am I gaining out of having a Sportmaster II 1:87 gear case?

    Hello,

I recently swapped motors on my 20' Checkmate Pulsare 2000 BRX upon picking a a very nice 1997 225 Promax. The motor had low hours, great compression and very low leak down numbers. The lower unit is a newer production sport master II that was put on the motor over last winter and has less than 4 hours on it. The boat runs 70-75 with a light load which is plenty fast for me considering it spends 99% of the time pulling tubes and skiers. I know it's s super strong lower unit, but what am I really gaining out of it over a standard gear case for what I use it for? If I wanted to sell it, what standard lower unit would you all recommend to replace it with? A 2.5L, a 3.0L, an older CLE? What would a fair price for this gear case be if I were to sell it?

A 20 inch 2.5 sportmaster is worth 2000 to 2500 if its nice-the 3.0 sportmaster brings another $1000 on average. A fleetmaster will do everything that you want to. The sportmaster is designed for running on the surface and is considered the best for speeds over 90 mph. Your replacement options are a 2.5 fleetmaster or a 2.5 CLE. Get something with a torque tab built in.

    Hope this helps,

    Joe

Yeah, it's mint and is the 3.0 version. Is there a good source for decent priced 2.5 fleetmasters or CLE's? I see a lot of 3.0 lowers for sale on Fleabay but many seem to be chineese knock offs.

2.5 lower will not bolt to a 3.0 liter mid and vise versa

That makes sense. It must be the most recent rendition of a 2.5 sportmaster being purchased new less than a year ago.

Not sure who's misinforming you, but there has been no change in the 2.5 Sportmaster. No "latest rendition" or Sportmaster II.

And the case you want is a Torquemaster, it will be faster than a Sporty with the same heavy duty internals.

I don't think anyone has misinformed me, I just don't know much about these things myself and I guess I mistakenly called it somthing it wasn't. The work and purchase order for the unit had a couple marks after the word sportmaster which I interpreted as an II. At any event, they must have done somthing right with the lower if it hasn't changed in 20 years. That is unless someone now is going to tell me they don't make them anymore and what is on the motor is simply new old stock that was ordered from Mercury in 2015.
