    Vegas V

    I have a 2002 Vegas V bottom with a 1999 225 HO Evinrude carb (making around 240 HP).
    Hydraulic Jack plate, solid mounts.
Prop shaft is 1 inch below the pad.
Dont know what the boat weighs but its not heavy.

I put a 28p Mazco RE on it but it doesn't seem to be doing what it should do, maybe Im expecting too much.

I got 69 MPH at 5800-5900 (hard to see exact) RPM. It was still climbing a bit so maybe would have seen 70 - 73 MPH max.

Does that seem about right ?
From what I've read I was expecting more, high 70s low 80s.

Motor too deep,do you have low water pickup on it?that boat should run a little over 80 with that much motor, mine ran an honest 80 with a 235 Crossflow and 29SRXClick image for larger version.

Youve got a nose cone on that 225 right? Id try get the motor up an inch or so and try it again. Then possibly try a 29 or 30 pitch chopper. Definitely check the bottom for any cracks, chips or waves and tapping the bottom out to check for any delaminated spots wouldnt hurt either

Its does have a nose cone.
Boat is a 2002, I havent checked to see if the core is still there but I can say that the boat was built by John Speath (A builder here in Ontario Canada) who is known to do some pretty fantastic work. I have been thinking about taking the boat to John let those guys check it over.
I just got a 4 blade trophy 28, going to take it out this weekend and see what it will do.

My brother and I did raise the engine more last weekend, moved the prop shaft to 1/4 under the pad, it got late and didnt have a chance to let it go. Probably going to RPM the engine, and Im thinking youre right checkmate, I need more pitch.

I should say. The bottom of the boat is spotless, no chips, nicks, missing paint, its straight as an arrow ( I can put a flat edge on it).
The transom is the same. The boat is in awesome shape. I don't have a better picture.

    Yep. Mazinaw. Love that lake.
Is it your old boat ? Seems like its changed hands a few times. Think I'm the fourth owner.
I gotta get the engine hood painted, its ratty. But then again the ratty kinda looks good.
Lower has to be redone for sure.

    +1 on DAH SRX

Don't even bother with Trophy prop.

    You are too low.

Centerline of your lower unit bullet should be at minimum even with the lowest point bottom center of the boat, 1/2" above is more like it if you have at least 6" of setback.

Should handle better the higher you go as long as you have water PSI jack it up. That 28 RE should put you at least to 80 unless you aren't really making over 225 hp.

Thanks for the input guys. I figured it wasnt doing what it should.Prop shaft is even now, havent tried it yet. I should have it out later today. It is an older engine, could be tired. Im hoping it its just setup.

    Up a 1/2"

Are you putting a big straight edge and a level on it to determine your bullet centerline is 1/2" above the lowest point of the center pad of the boat? Level the hull then level the cavitation plate on the motor then put a good solid straight edge from the hull to the centerline of the bullet and level the straight edge. Measure that centerline so that it's 1/2" higher than the hull pad. Watch water psi and temps first time out. If you have an indicator mark it with tape so you know where even is and where 1/2" above is. If you have a hydraulic jack once you get towards top speed keep tapping it up till you see water psi drop a bit then tap it back down.

Took it out. Didn't want to start. Flooded. Put it back on the trailer.
I have a straight edge I used flat against the pad and centre on prop shaft, or as close as possible without getting mathematical . My brother marked the plate for -2, -1, 0, +1.

Once I get it sorted I'll post up a speed number.
Thanks guys. I appreciate the help.

    Update

Got er' running again. Was having primer issues which was making it a bear to start when it was cold.

As far as the set up goes. Turns out we had the jack plate marked wrong. We did our measuring with the motor trimmed all the way in which was 5 degrees negative. Thanks to some tips from a local racer (Jeff Williamson "Yammer") we set it at neutral trim, remeasured and remarked the jack plate. With the jack plate topped out the prop shaft is even with the pad. My brother had it out yesterday afternoon running the Mazco again and it was stuck at 71 MPH (GPS) 58-5900 RPM with 3 degrees positive trim.

Doesn't like to plane with the Mazco either but the exhaust is stock so im guessing that's not helping.

Shouldn't this motor pull a 28 pitch prop to the rev limiter running the motor at this height?
