    V-4s

Anyone got any tricks up their sleeve for any simple fairly inexpensive mods to help the 69 - 72 electric shift V-4s to get a little more power/speed out of them? Can you get a nosecone for the lower units?

You can nosecone those electric shift lowers but carefully, when welding...after each weld allow cool down time as not to hurt any of the internal magnets that shift the clutch dog in and out. That lower unit is quite heavy. As far as inexpensive engine mods that are fairly simple to have done.....you could have the heads milled down to raise compression. Other than that, you have a recreational outboard which would require quite a bit to really make it fast

I'm assuming you can't epoxy them on as some other motors have had done. I've seen some done with success, and some I've heard have broken off. Do you have a brand in mind that might possibly work better than others?

First off the ignition systems on them is a disaster. Points, distributor cap, tricky anti reverse band, elect shift, just to mention a few. When was motor rebuilt last? If you like it because it is a antique,on a antique boat then keep it stock. Otherwise move on to something newer. If you really want to, yes you can epoxy a nose cone on it. Have installed many over the years with just epoxy, you must fill cone with epoxy. Bobs sells cones for V4's

Also the early v4 had small wrist pins when they uped the hp to 125 in 72 they started having failures, a nose cone isn't going to do much for ya at the speeds that motor is going to be running . Dave

Did they put better wrist pins in the 73 models like the 115s and 135s?
