Thru-hull fittings from gas tank leaking cougar 21 MTR Help
Not sure that this discussion is in the right spot but here goes. I have a 21 cougar MTR with dual tanks. Each tank is fastened on through the hull with four bolts. Some of these bolts are leaking water into the bilge and I think dropping them out, putting new sealant in and refastening is the solution.
One of these bolts however is very recessed (maybe from someone over tightening in the past or wear)....the boat is 31 years old so anything is possible.
The question is what is the best way to fix this. Pictures attached as follows: Non leaking non recessed first. Then recessed. White stiff around and in hole is surf wax to stop leaks temporarily.
Thanks S&F

Bolting through the hull is crude and absolutely the wrong thing to do . Its a wonder that tank hasn't fallen apart with the movement of the hull that has been partly stiffened by the fuel tank !(a fuel tank stringer !That's new !! )
Tanks need flexible support and to be able to move a little with the sloshing of the fuel in all directions ,and the movement of the hull each independent of the other so a reasonable gap between the hull and the tankLast edited by tunnels; 07-20-2016 at 05:31 PM.
Messing round with boats is fun !! the learning never stops ,even after more than 30 years there's always something new happening somewhere ! BUT somethings never change and some problems never go away and just keep reoccurring !!so moved into Composite Forensics , Now that something completely new !!

I have never seen a fuel tank thru bolted on the hull. This might be one for the redneck engineering thread....

My 85 Eliminator is the same. Already had to clean out wet balsa around one of them and redo the mount. Boat is getting recored now, will eliminate the bolts. I bet those "recessed" bolts have wet core around them (assuming the Cougar, like my 21 Daytona, used core there).

The hydraulic water pressure on those bolt openings is tremendous. If replacing them I would bed and cover them in epoxy instead of just using sealant.
