Negative Tongue Weight on a 19' Tunnel

    Hey guys,
looking for some suggestions on how to add some tongue weight to my trailer. I've got a 19' Bahner tunnel sitting on a tandem axle Hensley Gunter Trailer. The problem is instead of having tongue weight i almost have negative tongue weight because it is an outboard with a setback jack plate there is too much weight behind the axles and the tongue can be lifted with one hand and when the motor is trimmed up the tongue will actually float level without dropping to the ground. So while trailering it bounces up and down a lot and you can hear the slack of the hitch in the receiver slapping around. Because it is a tunnel and sits low and close to the trailer some options are out such as mounting the spare tire up front and I do not want to the move the boat further up on the trailer leaving the skids exposed in the back and making it more difficult to tie down. The axles cannot be moved back any further than they already are either. Any suggestions would be appreciative.

Is the trailer tongue "level" with the ground when it's hooked to your tow vehicle?

yes its level that is the first thing i checked. I have read that if you drop it lower it will add tongue weight but i would prefer that it trailers level not at a downward position and unfortunately the axles cannot be moved back further. That was the first thing I checked.

What about removing the front axle ?

    You could run different height tires , 205 front/ 255 rear ....

Tried that once. It definitely helped but was a pain in the butt to get in and out because they had to be all the way up under the bow. looking for something more permanent or at least easily removable

Not many choices. Move the axles back or move the boat forward. If you could ever find it you could bolt some lead on the tongue. Second option would be some heavy steel plates on the tongue. Sounds like you need about 80 to 100 lbs.

Sometimes you can adjust the leafs to change the load.

You can add longer shackles to the rear axle leafs to reduce load on the front.

I would mount a locking toolbox or a spare tire or two up there. Load the tongue down.

I have the same problem with the same boat, but a single axle trailer. I need to move the axle back, but in the mean time I just throw a couple of 5 gallon water jugs (blue gas cans) under the deck for towing. It seems to work.

Your hull is exactly the same as mine except for the protrusion in the back of yours has been removed. But between that and the setback jackplate is what causes it. Is your trailer a Hensley Gunter? It would be much better if it was a single axle. That is why most Bass boats are but Bahner built mainly Jet boats, the way this trailer is set up it really seems its meant for a tunnel jet built by bahner.
