Billet shifter (Eddie / rex marine)
Hi,
Want to install a locking shifter for my merc 2.5 200 but this shifter does not have enough throw to engage forward and reverse.
I've been searching on this site and found out at the lever on the backside is not long enough.
I made a longer lever but dont know where I should drill the hole to hook the cable to. I dont have an original remote controle so cannot meaure how much throw is needed.
Does someone know the exact dimensions of the lever of the shifter (from center to center, see pic) OR how much the cable should be able to move? I estimate about 3" of movement / travel on the cable but not sure.
Thanks!

Nobody that installed or used a billet shifter?
Someone with a stock remote who can measure the travel needed?
Thx

I don't understand the problem. Can't you just go back to the motor and put the gearcase in forward... measure how much cable is sticking out at the shifter end, the put the gearcase in reverse and measure again? The difference should be the "throw" you need.
Or better yet just measure the throw at the motor when you shift from forward to reverse... both ends of the cable move the same amount!

3" throw is industry std. Just rigging a Merc from Yamaha with the same Rex shifter. No issue with not enough throw using top hole on shifter bracket. Have to make sure when installing the cable holder bracket that neutral splits the difference for the cable movement(some fine tuning with clevis threading to the cable end).

Thanks. Seems like there are shifters with a bracket with 2 holes and another longer with 3 holes. I guess the one with 3 holes should be ok. I have one with 2 holes. I read multiple threads about people that only can get forward because not enough throw but never saw the solution of how much throw is needed....
David: I'm rigging my boat and fabricating cable holder etc for the shifter. My gearcase is at the dealer for repair. So cannot measure the throw as suggested.
Thx
