My first post my first outboard my first time in it and my first blown head gasket.
Two weeks ago I bought my first outboard (always had jets). 19' Daytona with what I was told was 225 mariner big Reed motor???? Can't find any serial numbers. Or proof and theres no stickers on the cowl. Any ways I've been taking it out after work Every day to get a feel for her before the Holiday weekend. Took her out Saturday she ran great all day burnt over 30 gallons of fuel and pretty much never lifted all day. On Sunday I got in it and after 20 minutes or so she blew a head gasket. Pulled the motor everything looks good except the gasket. Any idea why this happened?

That "burn" lines up with the exhaust port on one of the upper cylinders?

I don't know, I've only had them burn on the upper cylinders from inadequate water flow... sorry.

Appreciate the response. I am extremely new to out boards and don't want to just slap it back together if I'm missing something. Everything looked good inside plugs looked good. Water pressure was good oil was 40 to 1. I will say I ran her very hard all weekend and did some long runs at wide open throttle. I was in the middle of one when it happened.

I would put a straight edge across the block and head to check for warpage. If ok replace gasket and see what happens>

I'll straight edge em both for sure. Are all 2.5 head gaskets the same? Like o mentioned earlier i don't know what engine I have.

Gaskets are not all the same. Several thicknesses available from .75 thru 1.25. Obviously the thinner the gasket (.75) the higher the resulting compression. Also want to be careful torqueing heads. Some say x amount of pounds plus 90 degrees. That is for new bolts only. Reusing bolts is fine just don't ad the 90 or you can pull threads.

It looks like that head has been milled,If you could check the cc that may help. Also look at you old gasket, what brand is it, and how thick?.It should have some info on it.

27 822844 00 is the number I found on the gasket. Cant find any on Google with 00 as the last numbers. I will get a big syringe and check cc on head. Does anyone know what stock is?

Dont know if you have looked already, but the serial number should be somewhere on the transom mounting bracket. What year is it?
