    Omc lower unit bearing carrier.

Broke two carriers in the last 10 years decided to try something different, had it machined down then a slug machined to fit tighter in the hole and be 1/2" wider to span the slight groove on front and back side, I hope to try it out this week and see how it does. Matt

It was either this or machine a whole carrier, I drilled and tapped it tonight and put it all together just got to pressure test it and fill it with fluid tomorrow bolt it up and run it and see how long it lasts.

I remember you had said that on a post and if I remember right it was a slight press fit, I figure if this doesn't last that may be my next option. I ran it today and so far so good.

Yes they were a press fit. How are you keeping it from turning?

I pinned it to the housing. Drilled and tapped 4 holes across from each other. I used small holes for exhaust since I have the taylor mid and most if not all of the exhaust goes out the mid. Seems to hook up a little better on holeshot now but a little different when I back out of a top end run. Gonna run it some more tomorrow.

Good idea hope it lasts a while for ya.

For what it's worth I have split the trailing edge of a sportmaster carrier and it was not loose. The 15x36p is rough on cases. Ur fix would have helped that one too.

I am having a hard time keeping my gearcase alive on my flats boat, its a 60 degree V-6 with a 2000 year model case, Bobs flats type LWP and a Power-Tech OFX4 21 pitch prop. When I disassembled the case to send it to have the nose cone installed, the gear case and internal components were perfect. After putting everything back together and running the boat for approx. 10 hrs the gear oil started looking bad, discolored and particulate matter in the oil. when I disassembled the case it looked like the fwd gear and pinon had fractured. I had a old boat guy in our area claim it was caused by hydraulic pressure between the gear teeth, opinions?

I am no lower unit expert by any means but I know they are very sensitive to shim placement and proper torque,I am sure someone will chime in with some more advise on it, Matt

If you are asking about my case, the only welds are were the cone was welded on.

It is possible that the welding to put the cone on warped the case or the reassembly was done wrong causing the gear issue. We always welded them with the internals still in them. Post a photo of the gears.

looks very good, cant see why it wont be a success.
if using a snout or other means of exhaust relief it will be perfect.

looks so good its a shame it has to be hidden.

I've disassembled the case quite a few times over the years to check its condition, original shims were in place and all the bearings looked good. The problem started after adding a hydraulic jack plate and the lwp, that's when we started running the case in a semi-surfacing position when in shallow water. In a merc. case you adjust pinion depth and backlash much like we do when we set up a ring and pinion in a differential in a car. Seems like the OMC case adjusts only pinion depth and lets the back lash fall where it may?
